I do. I must be a sorry ****. I'll eat a fine meal by myself if someone is paying for it.

Steak n shake's food blows. The shakes are pretty good. Really good.

Never had one of the new Chick-Fil-A shakes. May have to try one. Just not on Sunday.

I eat alone too -- the travails of being a beat writer on the road. I'm still not used to it, it's never the preferred option, but I do it -- unless my game ends so late I have no choice other than fast food.

Whether or not that has anything to do with me being a sorry ****, I have no idea, I'm thinking my sorry ****edness was established long before I ate alone.

Steak 'n Shake sucks big time aside from the shakes. And it's overpriced too.

I miss the 24-hour Skyline Chili's in Louisville and Cincinnati. Yum!

IJAG, I say this with love: don't subscribe to that "I don't eat a restaurants alone" theory. It's OK to go to a restaurant and sit at a table by yourself. Unless it's a feminine thing.

OK, I take that back. I do, occasionally. But I read my entire 427-page book on the four-hour flight out here, and didn't want to stop and buy a new one to read over dinner. I usually eat alone for lunch. Eating alone on a Friday night in a strange town feels ... losery.

Of course, I eat at the local truck stop alone, but there are so many losers like me that it feels natural. You never know, though. Go to a nice restaurant, sit alone and you might meet a cute waiter (or waitress, depending on the team you play for) or spot a single guy sitting by himself.

Not to threadjack or anything, but what about going to movies by yourself? I've gone to at least six that I can think of by myself and I dig it. I hate the whole having to discuss what you just saw with other people thing.

Always pack two books. No. 1 rule of the road. I'd rather get caught short on drawers than books.
Plus, restaurants are too dark for reading. Bug the **** out of someone via text message.

Ayers Rock Strip, medium rare, please.

I'd sit on the floor in a corner by myself at Outback.

Eating at the bar there is cool, with one of those little tray things they put over the hump in the bar. Unless you get caught between two smokers.

Ah, TWO books. That's where I went wrong.

I've gone to movies by myself, but only twice. Feels even weirder than eating, because eating you're doing something. Movies, anyone sitting behind you KNOWS you're alone.
God I'm such a looser.

And Xan, I'm not trying to pick anyone up. Thanks though. :)

Going to the movies alone is only trouble when you're sitting in front of Pee Wee Herman.

I've done both and feel weirder eating by myself, unless it's lunch. More people can see you when you're eating alone, and I like the idea that I'm distracting people at movies, making them wonder why I'm there by myself.

I saw The Departed solo a couple weeks ago. Am I a looser?

Wait, don't answer that ...

I don't have any problem being by myself in any situation, though.

What's sad is that I considered a joke along those same lines in my previous post. Deviant minds, I guess.

At the Diana theater in Amsterdam, I did. Then again, the theater was packed with Pee Wee Hermans and the odor of years-old "seed" on the floors and seats made me ill.

The reason for me being there? Research. Yes, research.

Must have been a fluke trip to the In-N-Out because I believe that it is an awesome place to eat. Of course, when everybody tells you its awesome for years and years and years and then you finally get to go there, anything short of having an orgasm will leave you less than happy.

As for going to movies alone, I have done it, especially when I'm on the road. It is no big deal.

If I have to eat alone on the road, I'll usually sit at the bar. That seems less pathetic.

I just, in general, hate being alone. I crave human interaction. It's why I instantly reach for my cell phone pretty much any time I'm in my car or anywhere.

Thanks, Buck! I'm sending my schedule for tomorrow. I'll expect to meet you for dinner.

Count me among the few who think the burgers at In-N-Out are a little overrated. LOVE the fries and shake, though.

The burgers are no better than third in LA behind Tommy's and Fatburger.

Tommy's is awesome, no denying it. But that's where I go for chili burgers. In-N-Out is different.

The advantage of eating at a bar alone is you'll be able to be seated quicker. The risk is smokers, but it's an acceptable risk.

And Moddy, I'll raise you an Ayers Rock Strip for a 9-ounce filet -- well done. Outback is one of the few chain joints I don't mind. I actually half enjoy Lone Star too, but not Texas Roadhouse.

For quick eats, I wish I was out east more often -- I dig me some Sheetz.

As far as the book thing, here's something I do. I either scout the location ahead of time or look in the phone book when I get there for where the Borders (or Barnes & Noble, if I'm slumming) is located. You're killing time by looking, killing time by browsing and you get your books too.

In my cadre of frequent stops, there's only three locales I know of that don't have a Borders ... including my own town! ASSHOLES!

It's kind of the intellectual version of another favored pursuit of road weary sportswriters -- an activity called ...

Drag Your Drunk, Desperate Ass To The Nearest Strip Joint, Quality Of Said Joint Being Immaterial, And Proceed To Fawn Over And Drop Ridiculously Pathetic Large Sums Of Money On Barely Passable Strippers Who Would Sooner Kick You In The Nads Than Get Within The Red Zone Of Any Of Your Privates.
