I've heard of this chain before, and now they're opening one in the plaza that I work in.

Seems like a good deal, $10 or $20/month memberships and a yearly fee of $40. They have some rules, no tank tops that hang by a string, always sneakers no sandals, no grunting or loud music (I hope this is for the guys).

Higer tier membership comes with access to massage therapy, massage chairs and red light therapy. Plus you can bring a guest every time. Meaning I can drag Dr. J without paying for another membership.

Anybody have experience with these guys? They don't have a pool, but I could never get in for free swim at the Y anyway.

I go sporadically, but for $20 a month it's painless to keep the membership on a string. Never had a problem there, and it's a pretty good gym experience in every way whenever I go.

The price is good. The rules mean that it should have a good atmosphere for normal people.

The most important thing though is "in the plaza that I work in." I have found that gym convenience is the biggest factor is me actually using a membership.

They have outlets here in Albuquerque, but the reviews on Yelp are terrible...namely, that they are frauds about the $10 a month deal. Maybe it's a local situation, not sure, but apparently it's just about impossible to end your membership.

I know nothing about Planet Fitness, but I'd read the fine point on that. I belonged a gym that told you that, but you could only bring each guest twice before they were ineligible.

Fine print checked, no limits. I checked the Yelp reviews for the surrounding areas and they're not too bad. The only thing I wouldn't count on is the gym staying open 24/5 during the week. Our town just will not have the business to support that.

Planet Fitness is OK, I guess. I had a membership there for a year or so, then canceled it when I moved out of the area ... they still send me bills every month, years later, even after phone calls with managers and registered letters, etc.

You've got to buy the $20 membership for correct spelling.

What wicked said. Be careful with fitness chains, because, in the fine print, they can get your credit card number and continue to withdraw cash, even if you've claimed you're stopping.

Premier Fitness in Canada was notorious for this.

And you can tell your bank to stop paying that account, right? I had a gym try to stop me from closing my membership when my contract was up. I laughed and told them they weren't getting any more money out of me, no matter what they tried. The gym even tried coming back around, for $600 plus penalty fees, one whole year later. I ignored that, too, and never heard another peep.

My credit rating is excellent, so I wasn't about to worry about that. Never saw a mark against it, though, and I had the paperwork to support my position anyway. But I refuse to let gym nonsense scare me. My next step would have been to tell the gym that I would report them to the state attorney general. If that doesn't scare 'em away, game on.

How much does it cost them to keep it open late at night? They're only paying someone $10/hour (if that) to work the desk, and then pay the lights bill. That's it. If it allows them to sell 50 more memberships a month, it's worth it.

the 24/7 things works with a card swipe system. if you want to work out at 2 a.m., you may be the only person in there, but you get access. You also assume liability if you get mugged, have a stroke, break a leg, etc. because no staff member will be in until 8 a.m. or so.

They may charge you extra for that time....not sure so make sure to check that in the contract.

So more than seven years later - I noticed there's a Planet Fitness within walking distance. Twenty cents to join, 40 bucks once a year and 10 bucks a month. That's for the regular membership, I don't need the guest passes and whatever else. I just want some decent cardio equipment and a place to do some light weights.

Seems like a no-brainer, right? But I still hear some so-so and some negative comments about the chain. This one is open 24 hours during the week but I don't need that. I'd go this time of day.

For what you want, it's ideal. Worth the upgrade to 20 bucks a month if that location has the HydroMassage beds. You get a nice, invigorating "massage" any time you want. Plus, the upgrade gives you access to all other PF locations when traveling.

I think this one does have the beds, I'll see if they'll give me a free spin in one. I'm not traveling enough to make that other bennie worthwhile, though I wonder how easy it is to switch if I do move back to the D.C. area?
