Pitching first person

Ok, I'll put out this question to the magazine and journalism gods. When pitching stories to magazines as a freelancer, generally, do editors despise the idea of a first-person piece? I'd think yes, because they're probably not going to waste their time with a sissy idiot who thinks he's important. But what if it's more about a fairly serious and complex issue than "me, me, me"?

If it's good you probably have nothing to worry about. Even on ESPN page 2 they have first person stuff.
Look at Tuesday Morning Quarterback and such.

If it works, you can write the entire story from the vantage point of Joe Garagiola's left big toe.

Get someone who knows good writing to read it for you.
