It could've easily been worse.

You can't even be serious, dools.

A one-year no-layoff pledge, a two-year pledge of keeping product, and only a 2 percent pay cut is a very good deal in this climate. It gives people 12 months to figure out their next step.

Agree to disagree. A guild that's worth a darn does not brook a pay cut and two weeks furlough, and doesn't all but assure a blood-spattered 2014.

I don't think you have been paying enough attention to Guild-related matters of the past five years. This is an insanely better deal than almost any other that has been hammered out in that time.

The guild renegotiated its deal that was was scheduled to run out in October. The pay cut isn't going over well but the agreement not lay anyone off was pleasant news.

NYT guild got a pay raise, no furloughs, improvements to work conditions.

Two different beasts. NYT isn't injeopardy of closing. The Daily News is losing money - big time. The Inky isn't growing.

Hell, why even have a guild if that's the best you can do?

Would you rather work at a shop with a weak guild or at one that promises not to lay you off in tough economic times and then weasels out of the promise when times tough? I think what is happening at the Newhouse papers is a strong argument for a guild contract. And the next time the CEO says you don't need collective bargaining ask if he has a contract.

Good point.

I'm not disagreeing that in principle you should have a guild. But not one that will give in to a pay cut and furloughs.

As opposed to a blood-splattered 2013?

Folks with mortgages, car payments, etc., will enjoy not having to play the roulette wheel for 12 months. Kicking the can down the road is something our country specializes in (see: Capitol Hill).

It's not a great situation. It bides time but there's no question the future of newspaper journalism is in peril in Philly.

Make 'em do it. Management talks cutthroat, but often backs down when its bluff is called. How much of a pay cut would have still been worth it in exchange for the go-ahead to hack away in 2014? 20 percent? 30 percent?

When was the last time management backed down in a newspaper negotiation?

When was the last strike, Youngstown? That did not end well, for anyone involved.

The New York Times within the last couple of years. Management's original offers there were draconian as hell.

Dooley, it was a standoff and the guild blinked.
