The Adirondack Daily Enterprise, the only daily newspaper published in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York, and its weekly sister paper, The Lake Placid News, have an opening for a full-time reporter for a hybrid news beat: half outdoors, half sports. We’re located in the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park, a sparsely populated patchwork of private and public lands roughly the size of New Hampshire. One half of the beat includes outdoor recreation, environmental quality and forest management as well as the people, flora and fauna found in our great outdoors. We want an avid journalist and outdoorsperson — but not an advocate — who will spend much of his or her time in the woods and waters, looking for and asking about story ideas. This reporter will also cover the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, a key agency here. The other half of this job is with our consistently award-winning sports department. In addition to traditional athletics at six high schools and two colleges, we make a priority of the winter sports that continue to be held in Lake Placid, plus characteristic local sports such as triathlons, rugby, lacrosse, equestrian and skiing. The job includes news and feature writing as well as photography. It requires digging up and pursuing news stories, working with a wide range of people, writing skillfully on deadline and some copy editing. Curiosity, initiative and writing talent are musts. Familiarity with the area is desirable. News experience is preferred but not necessary. A four-year university degree is required. Benefits include health care, dental care, 401k and mileage. Please send a resume, references and three writing samples to Managing Editor Peter Crowley, P.O. Box 318, Saranac Lake, NY 12983, or by e-mail at [email protected]
