Prosecutors say Benner's family discovered the relationship in March, after he accidentally texted his daughter a message that he intended for the former student.

"Hey beautiful," the message said, according to the court documents. "Words cannot describe the love and feeling of (sexual activity). I love you with all of my heart (woman's name)!!!"

The daughter is going to win every game ever of Creepiest Text Message.

But ...

Prosecutors say Benner started having a physical relationship with the woman in March 2013, shortly after he resigned as an assistant coach and while she was junior. He had coached the woman through her junior season.

He was not a school employee, and she was 17 in a state where the age of consent is 16. Is there a crime here?

The charge was seducing. They will try and prove he started hitting on her when he was coaching.

He was trying to not cost her a scholarship:

According to the court documents, the woman's parents knew she and Benner met to play basketball but believed he was helping her to develop her basketball skills, as he suggested he could help her win a college scholarship.

About 4 years ago, a much loved volleyball coach (by other parents, I did not know him) at our middle school was caught having an inappropriate relationship with an 8th grader. Sadly, the coach's daughter was good friends with the victim.

The weird dynamic is based on the goodwill he built up, the parents were initially in his corner. Then it comes out he sent 1000s!! of texts to the victim.

There was a coach in west central Ohio a couple of years ago who was involved in a very similar situation with a student of similar age as the Mishawaka case. The texts that were involved made it look as if the student was seducing the coach. No matter ... coach wound up getting 21 years after pleading guilty mid-trial.

The student was an 8th grader? Who the hell cares what is in the texts when it is a 13-year-old girl and an adult male?

The Ohio case involved a student in the 16-18 range.

Middle school students? Throw the book at the teacher. HARD.

21 years? Man, that's harsh. By way of comparison, a teacher at Stuyvesant High School in Brooklyn only recently got fifteen years for selling military grade weapons to FBI agents he thought were working for Hamas. He also was found to have...
bought more than 27,000 cartons of purportedly untaxed cigarettes, sold Oxycodone to undercover investigators, and offered to sell many types of explosive devices, night vision goggles, gunpowder, and drugs, prosecutors said.
