Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, Cornell University, and the University of Delaware are in the Div I Final Four.

Wow, Duke has a lacrosse team?

I though that they only played basketball.

That's the first time I've ever heard of it.

I played the sport for a couple of years in high school -- we were the only public HS in Brooklyn to have a team and we sucked. Really loved watching it when I was in college, but haven't really followed the sport since.

Having said that, taped the Cornell-Albany game last Saturday (and when did Albany get good?). Great game with a very exciting finish. I'll be rooting for my Big Red to bring it home this weekend.

GOOOOOOO Blue Hens! Bob Shillinglaw is a good guy plus they have some good, underrated kids on that team. And the best faceoff middie out there, period, in Alex Smith. Kid got a free four-year education only because he can win faceoffs and sprint off the field. Hoping that Cornell can pull an upset off on their side too.

The Albany-Cornell game was great last week. I ended up being late to a bbq because I couldn't pull myself from the end. Albany has a great coach in Scott Marr, and his dog Otis. Too bad they lost with four seconds left in OT.

Really just as long as Hopkins doesn't win I'll be okay. I've never been to a Lax final four, and I won't get there this year either, but it's definitely an event I want to get to.

Go whoever plays Hopkins!

Lets go Big Red!

One of the leading scorers on the team is from a local high school.

I have absolutely nothing to base this on, but something is telling me Duke.....

Let's go Delaware. They are playing too well as of late to not win the championship. If they beat Hopkins, they can take out Duke in the final. Alex Smith is the most dominant face-off player in the history of the NCAA and the Hens are finally getting their offense together. Let's go Hens!

We always hear how Jim Brown was such a splendid lacrosse player.
And I am unfamiliar with the sport, to a large degree.
But you call Alex Smith the best ever "face-off" player in the history of collegiate play.
What position or style did Jim play at SU.
Educate me, if you will.

Albany was D III until relatively recently. I know a guy who played there. Really weird seeing them play at that level with the Hopkins, Marylands, Ivys, Dukes of the world. But they have put together quite a team.

As a Terp, I've never rooted for Duke in anything, ever. But I hope they win it all.

It would be a fitting vindication, wouldn't it?

I don't know enough about Brown's style, I think he was an attacker though. Smith's job is to win faceoffs. That's it. Just like a center in hockey or a center in basketball in a tip off, but as soon as that's over Smith gets off the field most of the time. Possession in lacrosse often ends with a few shots on goal before the other team gets the ball, making the faceoffs in that game that much more important. The best midfielders who win faceoffs usually win a little over half of them. Smith, on average, took three of four in his career. He's like the Adam Vinateiri of faceoffs. You're shocked when he doesn't come through.

But after that Smith is just an average, nothing special kind of player. Brown's reputation is not threatened. Neither is Gary or Paul Gait's.

Was seriously tempted to drive down to Baltimore Saturday morning and see how good a single seat I could buy on the street. But I believe I'll settle for watching it on TV after a day of sandlot baseball.

who rates college lacrosse players?

Let's see:
Johns Hopkins - No way can I root for them. It's like rooting for the Pope to win a "who's most Catholic" contest. Besides, they always tank early games and come back to make it somehow, and it just gets old.
Delaware - Not a freakin' chance. Their football fans are incredibly obnoxious, and I can only gather there would be some crossover.
Duke - Story of the year, hands down. Nothing really not to like about them.
Cornell - One of two underdogs, but UMass plays 'em in hockey this season.

Guess I'm a Blue Devil fan.
