The Daily Chronicle in DeKalb, Ill., has an immediate opening for an energetic reporter to cover Northern Illinois University athletics.

This is an opportunity for a writer to spread his or her wings and cover a Division I college. We are looking for a reporter who can develop sources and stay on top of the news but also take chances with innovative enterprise and feature writing. It's the perfect environment and opportunity for a writer to grow while learning the ropes of covering a major college on a daily basis for the first time. The position will also have the opportunity to write special A1 Sunday features on a regular basis.

Qualified candidates should have experience in a deadline-driven daily or college newspaper environment and the demonstrated ability to write clear, concise and engaging sports stories and features. A candidate must have a passion for community sports journalism and the ability to work collaboratively with photographers and editors to produce a great newspaper. The position also includes coverage of high school athletics and limited page design responsibility. Knowledge of Quark is a plus.

The Huskies have a new men's basketball coach in Ricardo Patton and a new football coach in Jerry Kill, all within the past year, as well as an up-and-coming women's basketball program. DeKalb is a vibrant, growing Midwestern college town just an hour west of Chicago with a dedicated readership and a young, energetic sports department staff looking for the perfect complement for its coverage of Northern Illinois.

This position offers a competitive salary, excellent benefits package, and career progression possibilities. If interested in this excellent opportunity, please send, or e-mail a cover letter, resume, six writing samples (make them diverse with game stories, features and news) to: Jon Styf, Sports Editor; Daily Chronicle; 1586 Barber Greene Road; DeKalb, IL 60115

They sound like they are really low-balling this one.

Why because of the experience they are looking for does not sound like they have covered a major university before??? Its a great chance for someone that loves sports to get a beat job with a newspaper.

I don't think they would travel but it would be great for whoever gets the gig.

Does anyone know anything about this paper? You think they'd shell out $25k per year on this one?

The Daily Chronicle got bought by Shaw Newspapers not too long ago. Maybe new owners wanted something different. I do know that Chulm is is at LaSalle, IL.

Now it really sounds like low-balling

Of course, without knowing the situation, this is all speculation. But my first instinct to this was, "Man, the former NIU beat guy must not have liked the new sports editor."

Or maybe it was just time for him to move on. I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

Definitely not the reason for this opening.

Any news on this job opening?

Yes, in the three days since the job's been posted, they've read through 200 applications, brought in several people for interviews, offered the job to one guy, been turned down, and offered it to another who's currently considering it.

Or, you could just give it some time.

What's the record for shortest time between original job posting to "Any news here" post? Somebody should make it a point to get on all new job postings on this board and post "Any news here?" for the second post of the thread. It could be the new "You're hired."

Anybody heard whether the second guy will take the job? Guess they're moving fast on this one. ;D

Assuming the second guy didn't take the job, whats the status in DeKalb?
