Personal and business cuts, apparently, Ottawa wants everyone to share the wealth.

No, Ottawa wants the affluent and the corporations to share the wealth. Those at the bottom of the economic food chain got shafted.

The feds have a $16.5 BILLION surplus.

Instead of cutting the GST from 6% to 5 (a useless economic measure if there ever was one ), they could have transferred that 1% to the cities for improving social housing, mass transit and reducing poverty.

And the Liberals, led by Dion, are going to abstain on the vote because if they bring down the government (this would be a vote of non confidence) they'll get their asses kicked in the next election.

Flash, it's nowhere near $1500.00. It's more like $150.00 by lowering the GST and another $150.00 for a family making $45,000 a year. And every single economist and most CEO's will tell you that the GST reduction is a political ploy--it has nothing to do with stimulating the economy.

And once again, that troglodyte Harper is ****ting all over Toronto.

He could have used some of that surplus to fix the GTA's transit problems--the TTC is the only transit system in North America that relies solely on fares to finance itself. It's a joke and the Feds should be ashamed of themselves.

And JR, you're right. If there was ever a more useless tax than the GST, I've yet to see it -- and that's coming from someone in California, which has some of the highest rates of any state.

Your city isn't the only one with a huge transit problem, the lower mainland is a disaster. Cutting the GST is a joke, it's nothing more than a PR move. The average family will not even notice it.

that's the problem it services such a small area, you are forced to drive.
It took me 2 hours to get to GM place last Friday and I'm only 50 km's away. Would have loved to take transit but it wasn't even an option

My feeling about taxes is you should know how much you're getting screwed.

When the GST was originally introduced, it replaced a patchquilt of hidden taxes like the 8% manufacturing tax.

GST is brilliant in its simplicity. Since it's a pass through tax, the government is using corporations as tax collectors.

Ontario has a provincial sales tax, too. We pay 8% on top of the GST.

Besides, the Maritimes has to have some revenue streams to pay for all the people on welfare down there. :)
