The shamrock has three leaves. Its prominence in Irish culture is attributed to a (probably apocryphal, but pleasant) story that St. Patrick once explained the three-in-one doctrine of the Trinity by using the shamrock.
The use of the four-leaf clover on St. Patrick's Day in the States is, like green lager or plastic bowler hats, a well-intended but deeply wrong attempt at Irishness. Your part in not perpetuating this very minor but nevertheless annoying cultural misdemeanor is appreciated.
