need to do a write-up on local kid going to the nfl combine and his draft prospects. who are some good "draft gurus" i could try to contact?

Talk to coaches of teams he played against. The kid's coach might be a bit biased.

Who the hell is Mel Kiper Jr.?

Have you ever seen Kiper and Joey Buttafucco in same room?

I second that. If you can't get college coaches talk to the high school coaches whose teams played against this kid. That even emphasizes the local angle even more.

eff the gurus. none since buchsbaum has been worth a darn. the guy dedicated his life to the nfl draft, and had the respect of EVERY -- and i mean EVERY -- nfl exec in the league. even a **** like belichick was respectful of joel.

anyone here who ridicules the late buchsbaum is an efftard. everyone after him -- including espn star kiper -- knows NOTHING. joel, on the other hand, knew more than anyone i've ever known, regarding draft stuff.

when we lost joel, we lost the genuine article.

For the record, I wasn't making fun of Buchsbaum... As Shockey pointed out, he was the best guru ever...

this was a tremendous story. a must-read for anyone who fancies themselves a joel/draftnik.

I like Scott Wright of NFL Draft Countdown.com. Guy know his stuff AND his site is 100 percent free - and very informative and well-organized.

Damn, I never even thought of this comparison. Wow, that is scary how similar they look to each other. Nice, fishwrapper.

I interviewed Buchsbaum in 2001. He was notorious for not wanting to do phoners, but I got it hooked up through a former co-worker who was then working with Buchsbaum and vouched for me.

Quite an experience. Gave me plenty of primo quotes, though.

Dan Shonka. He was an NFL Scout for almost two decades and now runs his own Web site, OurLads.com. He's really good at returning calls, a decent quote and has always been helpful to me. Contact info's on the site.

I've also used Frank Coyle in the past, too.

Frank Coyle blows (long story). I've always thought Jerry Jones of The Drugstore List was good. He's probably little known, but puts out quality stuff. Not sure if he's still doing it or not though.

Ironic moment in the excellent story:

Of all the people who knew Buchsbaum, most knew him only by phone.

"It certainly was out of the ordinary," Belichick said. "It was like having an affair."
