newbie challenge

It's a Friday night and I am bored so I have decided to test the sports knowledge of this board. Obviously under the honor system, without looking it up, I ask the question:
Why does my last name (since I am still in college, and just dont care in general about outing myself), Zivic, have importance in the world of sports. My first hint is that you have to go back before 1950 to find the person that made it important. The old-timers and those from Pittsburgh will probably have the best chance at getting this answer without looking it up.
