http://NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Post is dropping Liz Smith's column this week to save money, leaving the legendary gossip columnist without a newspaper home in the city for the first time in 33 years. "I'm very sorry that that has come to an end, and that I wasn't valuable enough for them to keep me on," the 86-year-old Smith said Tuesday.

Last column to appear Thursday.

They have Page Six, which is grittier, so it's not like they're abandoning gossip.

Caught the blind item Tuesday about "an actor doing coke in a bathroom at an Oscars party while a recently slimmed-down stoner star was smoking pot outside (figure the last one was Seth Rogan). The best was number three about a morning cable hostess who recently returned after getting her eyes and chest done.

They'd cut back LS's frequency, a few years ago, as it was.

Meanwhile, Cindy Adams rolls on.

Mika? She was gone to "the south of France" for a few days.

Do you think more than 10 people read Cindy Adams a day?

Frankly, yes . . . my belief is that CA's stuff is very well-read . . . unlike Liz, who has
disintegrated into little more than a shill for her special pets (Cruise, Travolta,
Madonna, et al) in recent years. It's obvious that certain people have an enormous
amount of clout in terms of getting mentioned the "right way" in certain metro area
gossip columns, but to maintain optimum reader interest, you'd think it would be
wise to spread the plugs around, just a little bit.

She was on Ugly Betty last week. I'm guessing her column will continue to be syndicated.

I recall Cindy Adams doing a piece on the Yankees in the early 1990's. One of the lines was about a players behind. She wrote "nice."
Lost the little respect I had for her with that one.

Correct.

Not to mention (God help us) that she's picking up James Brady's dropped interview baton
in Charade Magazine.

Hell, the fact that she's still cranking it out at 86 should be deserving of some space in that paper.
