Why the love for Georgia? A horrible loss at home to South Carolina. Alabama lost at home to the No. 1 team with a hobbled Tua. Hell, Oregon's loss was on a neutral field to Auburn at the beginning of the year. Just change the College Football Playoff to the SEC Playoff and be done with it.

Georgia loses at home to a team that just lost at home to Appalachian State.

Georgia is just a placeholder in case it does the unthinkable and wins the SEC title game (it won't). Every committee poll until the last one should be seen as the exercise in ass-covering it is.
PS: For the conspiratorially minded, it also helps both Alabama and Oregon should Auburn beat Georgia this week.

In theory, Oregon will have a resume-building Pac-12 final to play should it win out (Utah's remaining schedule is fairly easy, they should be 11-1). Alabama most likely won't get to the SEC championship game.

Georgia isn't great this year, but the Notre Dame win looked more impressive at the time than it does now. Alabama really hasn't beaten anyone that's all that good, and it won't have done so at the end of the season, unless you count the SEC's 5th best team (Auburn) as a good opponent like Oregon fans want to do. Georgia will drop once it loses the SEC title game, and if it wins that game, it probably will deserve to be in.
