DESCRIPTION OF JOB: Covers the Atlanta Braves from spring training through the post season, including feature stories and additional assignments from the bureau chief and editors at Morris Publishing papers.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: College degree with emphasis on journalism.

EXPERIENCE OR TRAINING: Must have at least five years covering sports, two on the professional level.

MANUAL OR MOTOR OPERATIONS: Must have working knowledge of computers and layout, a drivers license and car.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Must be willing to live in Atlanta and travel to sporting events.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Cover Braves from spring training through regular season and post-season play, including game stories, notebooks, news stories and features.
2. Report on off-season news and developments.
3. Be available for assignments covering other sports.
4. Be able to layout some pages, when required.

A job covering the Braves that also entails some layout?! Sounds like an odd combination; I assume that would be filling in on the desk during the offseason (if there truly is one in any pro sport)?

I had a beer or two with Travis when he was in Augusta. He seemed like a nice guy, and he did a good job when he was in the A-U-G. I didn't really follow his stuff covering the Braves though.

As for the layout duties, the news service produces weekly feature pages, including one on NASCAR, that come out of the Atlanta office. I produce the NASCAR page every week in addition to my Georgia Tech and general assignment duties. The Braves person ideally would have the Quark skills to fill in a handful of times a year when I'm on vacation or otherwise pre-disposed.

I wouldn't call Adam Van Brimmer a chump. Nor would I call hockeybeat a chump for the one time he covered them.
