I don't think this is how the awards will end up, but if you based it on what has happened in the first half this is how I'd go.

I thought about Morneau for MVP, but Mauer splits the vote and the Twins wouldn't make the playoffs if the season ended today. The Angels would and Hunter is a big reason why. He has had a monster first half, helping to carry the team through all the injuries early on.

Lincecum is amazing, but Haren has been even better. In fact, I think he has been the best pitcher in the game so far this season.

Bochy deserves some notice for what the Giants are doing. This team was not expected to contend and they are still offensively challenged, but right now they lead the way for the NL Wild Card.

Haren's WHIP and walk numbers are fantastic and he's averaging about a strikeout per inning. Helton, meanwhile, has matched/is close to matching all of his 2008 season totals. Not bad for a 36-year-old.

I'd go a step further and include Hawpe in the MVP talks. Hawpe has already matched his 2008 total for doubles thus far this season and is batting well above .300.

Haren's WHIP and walk numbers are fantastic and he's averaging about a strikeout per inning. Helton, meanwhile, has matched/is close to matching all of his 2008 season totals. Not bad for a 36-year-old.

Some people are going to miss Haren because his win total was relatively low until recently and the Diamondbacks suck, but he has been consistently dominant all season. It's probably more of a fantasy baseball thing for me. I have him on one of my teams, so I've been watching his results closely all season.

Haren's No. 1 on my ballot with Linecum No. 2. And can someone please tell me how Javier Vazquez, who would be a very deserving No. 3, at the very least in the discussion with Josh Johnson, is NOT on the All-Star team.
Zach Duke got picked today as a DL replacement. Nice year, but Vazquez is second in Ks (about 10 per 9 inns.) and has a whip just a shade over 1.00.
Off topic, but it proves that managers and players are actually no better than fans (if not worse) at picking all-star teams.

Managers do seem to go for wins. Duke has more wins than Vazquez on a weaker team. Not saying I agree, but that's probably what did it.

Is Mauer a contender? Sure. Not close? Come on.

Mauer missed about a third of the season so far. The Twins wouldn't even make the playoffs if the season was over today. There is a strong argument to be made that he isn't even the most valuable player on his own team so far given the production Morneau has given the Twins and the fact that he has been there all season.

Rick Porcello is another candidate for AL Rookie of the Year.

He's had a couple tough starts the last week or two, which probably lowered him on the list a bit. But he does have eight wins and until recently, his ERA was in the mid 3s.

Obviously, he will have to bounce back a bit after the All-Star break, but the possibility is there.

Mauer is much better than Mourneau, who is very good.
But Mauer is the best hitter in the AL and a stellar defensive catcher. He's the only player in baseball right now that can even make an argument that he's more valuble than Pujols, mostly because he plays a position where even the most meager offense (Russell Martin, for example) is considered a huge bonus.

Pujols should be a unanimous pick in the NL. And Mauer, if the season ended right now, should be a unanimous pick in the AL.

But, of course, that's just my opinion. And what do I know from good baseball after watching the last month of the Mets. UGHHH!

AL ROY - Has nobody been paying attention to Ricky Romero (7-3/3.00/1.26)? Better numbers than Porcello, and much better than David Price (?) who somebody mentioned.

I also have a problem with "Lesbian Action" Jones as CPOY. Because all he really came back from was sucking.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I'm a big fan of Mauer, but I can't see how he would be MVP of half a season when he missed a month and his team is in third place.

Would I give him the full-season award if he hits the rest of the way like he has so far this season? Yeah, I would because of the impact he makes behind the plate. But right now that's just a lot of projection.
