Mitch Albom wrote a column this week, the premise of which was the differences between dropping kids off at college today and dropping kids off at college 50 years ago, with a transgender crack or two along the way.

There are no words.

Mitch Albom: Dropping kids off at college – then vs. now

NEW: “We drove our young prince to college today. What a proud moment. He was embarrassed by having his mom and step-dad and dad and former step-mom and dad’s current girlfriend all coming up to his room, so we had to watch from a distance. We saw him hook up his cable TV and his Xbox, then assemble his IKEA furniture. We also met his roommate, who seemed nice. Her name is X. And we are not supposed to use the word ‘her.’ ”

Mitch Albom's college Detroit Free Press column draws massive backlash

Holy ****. That is super embarrassing. I knew Mitch and I liked him personally, but who among the "top" columnists has written more howlers than he has?

Every time I see his name, I think about the time he was a fellow member of the guided tour my wife and I were on at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during the 2015 NBA Finals. He decided to let everyone know what he knew about music rather than let the tour guide talk. Then he got bored and walked away midway through it.

Me and my wife just looked at each other and I said, "Did Mitch Albom just hijack and then ditch our guided tour?"

"Yes," she said. "Yes he did."

My parents used our 35-foot motor home to lug my stuff to college when I moved in. I think my dorm mates saw that and thought I was going to be the spawn of Cousin Eddie.

By the end of the week they were asking me if I could borrow it to tailgate every Saturday for football games. I wasn't going to make the five-hour drive back home to get it, though. And my parents wouldn't have been too pleased with all the barf stains either, I bet.

It was low-hanging fruit but I don't see anything in the column beyond the pale. Bashing millenials and college students and helicopter parents is very 2014.

Fantastic.
Any chances he writes a book about it?

He already did, I believe, 10, 15 years ago?

I know everyone wants to criticize the guy. ... but on the face of it. ... he adopted an orphanage in Haiti that was devastated by the earthquake in 2010. He has raised a boatload of money and expanded it so he is taking care of dozens of kids at any given time. He has given his own money and a lot of time, he brings kids to the U.S. for medical care when they need it, and has gone down there personally every single month for years to make sure it is run well, even after the U.S. state department told Americans to stay away from Haiti.

There is not much to criticize there to me. Let him write as many books about it as he wants.
