Hiring McGwire would have been a mistake for the Yankees. They would have had to fire him in four years when Jetes takes over.

I have said this before but Barry Bonds would also make a great hitting coach. Forget the steroids, no one knows more about hitting except maybe Tony Gwynn.

Serious question now. I know he has a track record with the Cardinals now, even after losing Pujols, but is McGwire really that a great a hitter to be able to teach young players? He was predominantly a home-run hitter, and he had a great knack for picking up the ball because of his hand-eye coordination. Bonds was a better pure hitter, but he had the same hand-eye coordination that I would think you can't teach. Some are crediting McGwire's success more to his approach and presence. Can't argue with the results, I guess.

This is my line of thinking too, I guess. McGwire studied the game and knew how to hit, but he focused on hitting home runs so much because he pretty much had to be that guy at his size, and it hurt his game a bit. And having players to teach who don't have his power probably makes it easier for them to implement his philosophies.

McGwire knew how to look for pitches and work the count. Those are good starting points for anyone.

McGwire could have won batting titles if he wanted. He would have sacrificed some home run power but he had that ability.
