Read some news stories from Tampa early this week that Manny had been a wonderful addition to the Rays in terms of attitude and work ethic. Basically, he was out to prove that he wasn't done as a player.
My thoughts at that time were, it always starts out great with Manny then turns to crap. I guess the Rays will be the last team that gets sucked in by Manny-mania.

Busted twice for banned substances. Does that completely ruin his chance of getting in the Hall?

Both were towards the end of his career, but it's going to be hard for most voters to overlook getting caught twice.

What's the length of time for a second suspension?

He already did a 50 day suspension, right? Doesn't a second violation earn you a much longer suspension?

Manny (along with David Ortiz) tested positive in 2003. He was suspended in 2009. Now, he gets hit again. The guy is a Hall of Fame cheater, but that's about it.

Manny Ramirez retired from baseball Friday instead of facing a 100-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, according to two people briefed on the matter.

Ramirez tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug during spring training and was recently informed of the positive result, according to the people.

In a news release, the commissioner’s office said it had recently notified Ramirez “of an issue under Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.”

The statement added, “Rather than continue with the process under the Program, Ramirez has informed M.L.B. that he is retiring as an active player.”

The commissioner’s office said that if Ramirez wanted to return to baseball, he would have to face discipline for his positive test.

Eh, actually, I'd like amend my statement. After getting caught three times, Manny can't be considered a Hall of Famer of cheating. An Alvaro Espinoza of Cheating, perhaps.

Yeah, I had forgotten that he was one of the ones who tested positive in '03 without consequences.

So, that's three times. I don't see how he gets in, unless years later they put in a host of steroids users from that era.

I don't think the current voters will put him in.

Drug cheats **** me off. I don't like Bonds, I don't like Clemens, I don't like Palmiero.

But Manny tests positive and I find it funny. Not in a malicious way, either. It just doesn't bother me the way it does with other players.

I'm not sure what that says about me, or about Manny.

me personally, I'd put them all in. I don't live in naive Pollyanna land. The vast majority of the players in this era were taking something.
