The only problem you might have with Australia is the same problem I might have with St. Andrews. The cost. People is broke!!

My buddies are starting to talk Ireland or Scotland for a golf junket for our 40th birthdays. But I'm thinking, if the point of the trip is to play links golf, with caddies, maybe in lousy weather, then to get hammered every night, rinse and repeat for several days -- that could also be done in Bandon Dunes, Ore., for a fraction of the cost. Though I know Ireland/Scotland is special, blah blah, so probably not gonna win that discussion.

And yeah, before wives/kids we used to do the gambling trips once a year...Vegas, Reno, Biloxi. All were terrific.

Aug. 1999, just before my senior year of college. Me, my best friend and his buddy drove around the midwest, Canada and east coast to watch baseball and go to all the major hall of fames along with Cedar Point, Niagara Falls and as many bars as we could.

You could probably do a trip to Atlantic City as a lower-priced version of a Vegas trip. Save a ton of cash on the travel. Plus, everyone will be way less tempted to spend money on hookers.

Depends on what you wanna do. If you want a 2 or 3-day trip with good food and gambling (without the shows and whatnot), AC is perfect. Reduce cost without the flight. Stay at the Borgata, which has several nice restaurants, and gamble. Done and done.

Now, if you want the ENTIRE Vegas experience, go there. But if you want a cheap alternative, it's hard to beat AC.

All you need is one.

Full disclosure: I've never been to AC. But I know several people who have and they all rave about the Borgata. They say it's like you're not even in that dump of a city. From what I've heard, there's really no reason to leave the hotel. Good food? Check. Gambling? Check. Sweet hotel? Check.

Listen...I'm not saying AC is a great city. Obviously, it's not. And obviously Vegas pummels AC. But unless I really had a hard-on for Vegas or unless money wasn't an issue, I'd much rather save the $400 on a flight and head to AC for a couple days.

The casinos the Indians a few hours up 95 set up in Connecticut is a much better deal. Not only do you get world class shows, gambling and good eats, you can actually venture outside and not get shanked.

Plus, you are within 90 minutes of Boston and you can hit NYC on your way back. Tons of golf, outdoorsy-type stuff and Long Island is just a ferry ride away.

But I have always taken vacations by myself. No need to worry about itineraries, doing something I don't want to do, turning the light off when a buddy is trying to hook up.

I would counter with Reno. There are no super-flashy hotels like the Borgata, but the town is so much cheaper and friendlier than AC and most of Vegas, where they pretty much want to run a vacuum hose to your wallet. If you want clubbing and such it's not ideal, but there are some women to be found. And, ahem, it's 15 min from Tahoe.

Its always nice to blow off steam with the guys every now and then. But like Mizzou says, its hard to come up with the $$ with a wife and kids. I try to get my buddies as clients so I can expense it. Vegas is perfect, golf in the day, nap, great dinner, then gambling at night. Went to golf in Palm Springs in the Spring with a client and his two buddies, a blast. I recommend Thurs. - Sunday. Anything more gets a bit much.
