Seriously, crawl inside Jay's head and tell me what is he thinking. While trying to "lay low" Monday, Jay went on a television tour of every cable talk-show in America. He was screaming, shucking and jiving and blustering as best he could. He has stated he's afraid to go into the White Sox locker room, compared himself to radio talk-show hosts, ripped his paper's integrity, said he can work in Chicago as long as he wants and repeatedly insinuated that all the other sports writers in Chicago are afraid to criticize the home teams.

What is he thinking? What is his game plan?

My theory: He and his agent think this is his opportunity to go to the next level and land his on national TV or radio show. He sees himself as the sports version of Rush Limbaugh and he's hoping to catch the attention of a major media network. Jim Rome blew up after Jim Everett attacked. Jay thinks this is his Jim Rome moment.

Re: Let me ask this Mariotti question....

I think you're right about him pouncing on this. I remember he appeared on ATH the day of the incident, and he wasn't really making a big stink about it. He acknowledged that it had happened, and while he didn't brush it aside, he certainly wasn't raving.

Now that his "people" have gotten to him, I have a feeling that he's going to be milking this situation for all it's worth.

Next we'll be hearing, "Check that, Ozzina Guillen... welcome to the program!"

Re: Let me ask this Mariotti question....

Agreed. I think he's sick, twisted and demented. He's all hot air. It's his MO and how he's put together. It's his way of trying to get people back on his side. Ain't gonna work.

Re: Let me ask this Mariotti question....

I think Mariotti is trying to milk this situation and make it work for him. It is a sports talk show type mentality.

So I kind of agree with Jason Whitlock in that regard, but I disagree in this respect - the incident with Jim Rome and Jim Everett didn't help Rome's television career. There was a lot of attention, including ESPN overplaying it completely. That show faded away and Rome went a couple of years without being on television.

Moreover, that incident showed Rome for what he was - a chicken-ass punk.

You'd be a chicken ass punk with Jim Everett overturning a table in your face too. Rome is a douche, but lets not get carried away here.

Ha! What Rome did should be the wikipedia definition of a chicken ass punk. To purposely goad the guy like some lame middle schooler then run squawking.

Let me ask these Mariotti questions:

Why are we beating this dead horse?
Why should anybody outside of Chicago or any moron who watches the screamfest known as Around the Horn give a **** about Jay Mariotti?

Re: Let me ask this Mariotti question....

they call this place "sportsjournalists.com".... let me know when they change the name, spnited.

Re: Let me ask this Mariotti question....

So we need six threads on this douchebag?
Or does each new threads you start feed your overwhelming ego, Jason?

What you and Mariotti need is a MediaWhore.com message board.

Re: Let me ask this Mariotti question....

... Anyway....

I think Jay has made his bed here. He is the victim of the mean ol' White Sox. He's gonna play that card for all its worth. He'll be the Cindy Sheehan of sports journalism.

Re: Let me ask this Mariotti question....

spnited: IMO this story has gone way, way, way past the individuals involved into a study of the dysfunctional American newspaper. The Sun Times appears to be unraveling at the seams, unable to cope with a formerly valued employee in the midst of nationally televised mutiny. No person in that organization has stepped forward to try and end the situation or even to PUT THE PAPER FIRST. That's amazing, dismal, and infinitely more important than any individual opinions of Jay Mariotti voiced on this site.

an anonymous man with 8,000 posts... says this...this place is absolutely hysterical sometimes..

Re: Let me ask this Mariotti question....

Is John Cruickshank still running the Sun-Times?
If so, then it is no surprise the place is dysfunctional and paralyzed in the face of this mess.

The thing is, Jason, Mariotti already has had a daily national radio show on Sporting News Radio. It got cancelled because he was absolutely awful to listen to - shrill and irritating. During the time Bobby Knight was on the griddle for the choking tape, it was the only thing he would talk about for weeks at a time. Always, of course, Jay kept repeating he was the "lone media voice with the guts to criticize Knight", unlike all the other spineless media weasels. Most of America's listeners simply didn't enjoy hearing about Knight that much, to say nothing of Jay's self-proclaimed heroism.

Ater Jay's Sporting News flameout, ESPN Radio put him on Saturdays with Max Kellerman, and the complaints from network affiliates poured in because listeners hated it. He couldn't even make it through a year on a local radio deal in Chicago because he was such a prick. Maybe he's got a book deal in mind, because there is absolutely nowhere for him to go in radio and he's already got the closest thing he'll ever get to a TV show.

From the Moddy pipeline:

Mariotti on indefinite and unplanned vacation.  Rock solid sources on this. "Allegedly" the vacation is Mariotti's choice.

At least he now has the time in his busy schedule to check out a Sox game.

Re: Let me ask this Mariotti question....

"Vacation" just from the paper, or will he still be on ATH from his living room?

Re: Let me ask this Mariotti question....

You know you're at odds with your paper when they start doing gratuitous stories like this one: DITKA: I LIKE OZZIE!

http://www.suntimes.com/output/sports/cst-spt-ditka27.html

''Personally, I don't really know Jay Mariotti,'' he said. ''I've heard of him. I'm sure he's probably written critical things about me. ... I guess he rips a lot of people. But you can't control what these guys write when they choose to rip you, and that's part of the problem with journalism today. Its values have changed."

Re: Let me ask this Mariotti question....

Hmmm. Is this a standing-eight count or is Mariotti stretched on the canvas with Telander's arms raised in one corner?

This "hit" really reminds me of the way Joe Pesci got whacked in Goodfellas. Mariotti thought he was going to be made after the "work" he did on Ozzie, Dusty, Shani Davis, Reseindorf(spelling), Chicago special Olympians and Mother Theresa.... Instead, all of his enemies conspired against him and took him out in the middle of what he thought would be his grandest controversy (Ozzie calling him an F).

Or will Mariotti rise up from this and settle all of his debts? Will Telander one day be taken out Mo Green style, a shot between the eyes? Or will Mariotti pop Telander in the mouth, a message hit for squealing on Jay for years of name-calling?

I am kind of curious how this might affect his ATH status ... not that I'm too eager to give the show a ratings boost to find out ...
