The Athletic reports that Lee Corso is retiring. His final GameDay appearance will be following the show's season opener.

Agree.
Some thoughts:
1. GameDay will be in Columbus. Defending champs, Arch Manning's "debut."
2. While that's enough for a "big game," the two-hour tribute to Corso will be more cloying than Jim Nantz at The Masters.
3. Disney/ABC will exploit the hell outta this for ratings. It will be embarrassing.
4. With Corso going from part-time to no time, the wannabe frat boy Pat McAfee will have even more airtime. This season of GD will be gawd awful. I hope at some point McAfee's bullet proof ego will lead him to letting a profanity slip on air or doing something outrageous that is worthy of dismissal. Then we can all scream and ***** when Disney/ABC slaps his wrist while also patting him on the back.
5. The proper retirement for Corso would have been an announcement now and no fond farewell that has to be mixed in to what's supposed to be a pre-game/kickoff show.

The FOX Big Noon Kickoff Show has been the better show for a few years now....even if they are slowly adding too many elements that made me turn away from ESPN.

I always am amazed people have dozens of suggestions for making the show better. I don’t expect much. It is background noise for me as I ready the grill and food for gameday.

So you got me going down a bit of a rabbit hole; the cartoon I was thinking about was Spider Man from 1967-70, which must’ve been in early morning reruns on Saturdays. That’s the one with the iconic theme song. But, I also remember Spider Man and his Amazing Friends, Ice Man and Firegirl (?).

I do remember getting up fairly early on Saturdays to watch the cartoons but by the early (ish) 1980s they were on the wane for me, probably ending with the Smurfs.

I do remember Schoolhouse Rock ("Interjection! Exclamation Point! Or by a comma if the feeling's not as strong") and those shorts that Christopher Glenn used to do on CBS.

When you started to get your toon fix on Nick, Disney et al 24-7 was when the Saturday morning deal started to go away for OTA TV.

How much can they really do for ratings? I'll wait for a two-minute clip on social media. Corso's de-facto goodbye was last year when GameDay was at Indiana; part of the show featured a gathering earlier in the week with a number of his former players and coaches. I watched it because I'm an IU grad and was curious, but it really wasn't very good TV.

I agree with you on McAfee getting more airtime, I won't be around for that either.

Eh that’s bull****. They probably talk a bit too much about the SEC, but to be fair, it’s a damn good league with a massive collective fanbase. It’s not like they talk SEC at the exclusion of anything else.

Fox is the show that almost never strays from the conferences it covers and they never put Big Noon at a non-Big Ten/Big 12 site. Which is fine, their call, but when they’re stuck at a secondary Big 12/Big 10 venue, GameDay almost always feels like the far bigger show.

ESPN went into Big Ten country five times last season and it doesn’t have Big Ten rights anymore.

I hardly defend ESPN on anything, but College GameDay is still pretty damn fun to watch. Even with that goober McAfee on the show.

Somehow the news geared towards 10-year-old me was more intelligently written and presented than what I can now access at 49.

I was too young to ever see Square Pegs. But a few years later, preteen Dixiehack got his own version in cartoon form, which somehow lasted for even fewer episodes on CBS.



Four decades on, my mom and I still make occasional references to Booey Bubblehead.
