Personally, if Denver wasn't considering Iverson before tonight, they should now. Cause I think after the Artest problem, the NBA may answer with more than just the standard suspension for throwing a punch.

As far as teams no longer existing in any form, the NHL has the most recent one, the Cleveland Barons. The NFL had franchises in Dallas and Baltimore fold in the early 1950s. I can't think of the last NBA or major league baseball franchise to just die altogether.

No horse in this race, but it should be pointed out that while Dye didn't help his argument by saying the NHL has dropped teams, he's absolutely right about the lack of franchise continuity. Nearly half the franchises either didn't exist 15 years ago or were located in different cities.

Eight of the teams you listed were the product of expansion, which Dye claimed the NHL had not done.

That's right. Cleveland and Minnesota amalgamated in the first place after the Barons' owners, George and Gordon Gund, also bought the North Stars. When they sold the Stars, they were given another team by the league and they put it in the Bay Area -- fitting, because that's where the Barons franchise had begun in the first place.

No NHL team has "folded" since the Brooklyn (nee New York) Americans in 1942, and they didn't go willingly. They were granted a leave of absence until the end of World War Two but when their owner, Hall of Fame defenceman Red Dutton, tried to revive them the league reneged on their agreement.

The same thing happened with the Montreal Maroons, who last played in 1938 but were technically in limbo until after the war. The franchise was moved to Philadelphia but the league also refused to let them back in. No reason, other than a pie split six ways rather than eight means bigger pieces for those who actually get to eat.

The best part about the whole thing was Melo running away after he threw his weak punch. .... I haven't watched it enough to see what Robinson did to provoke Smith. Obviously he was jawing but I thought on first viewing that Smith went after him, and ended up underneath him on the ground, where Robinson could have punched him but didn't. Then when they got up Smith threw some limp wristed swing into Robinson's ribs that certainly didn't seem capable of breaking anyone in half. Not defending Robinson, who is definitely a punk, but I think Smith at least has to be in the ***** discussion. The foul wasn't THAT bad, and he didn't really impress with his fighting skills.

Carmelo musta caught Collins (?, can't remember who he actually threw the punch at) snitching to the refs or something. That by far was the biggest ***** move of the whole thing. Weak, cheap shot and then running like a *****.
