King Day

Me, too. I do, however, try to take a few minutes out of the day to reflect on what he meant to the country and how far we've progressed in large part because of his influence. It ain't much, but I think we see that influence every day and it's a good idea to take notice of it once in a while.

EDIT: When I say, "It ain't much," I'm referring to what I do to "celebrate" the holiday, not the amount of influence Dr. King had. Upon rereading my post, I thought that could be misconstrued.

Are we the only profession without this day off? Ugh.

Not that I feel we are entitled to it. I think its dumb to have the day off for the sake of having the day off. This bothers me more with giving kids the day off from school.

They should be in school learning about Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights protest not sitting at home watching the Real World. This steams me. In high school, they made us actually learn about Civil Rights extensively on MLK Day. Still, there were a few morons in the class who had no idea what "Separate But Equal" was etc.

It's a pretty good opportunity to break away from normal, boring routines and learn about our country's history.

Ok. End of rant.

Agreed.

Same goes for Labor Day and Memorial Day.

Gannett gave me six labor days this year.

From from 1984 to 2000, it was celebrated as Lee-Jackson-King Day in Virginia.

I've got no problem with an MLK Day. But why did George Washington have to start sharing with Abe?

Closeness of their birth dates. I remember having school off for Abe's day and Lincoln's day. (Damn, am I THAT old?)

I used to have them both off, which was awesome, considering my birthday landed on one. Then they took it away from me.

I also don't think people should have President's day off. Just Mikey. And just so he can spend his birthday ogling Danielle Fishel.

You said a mouthful there.

Want to hear something really, really depressing. My wife is a teacher at an elementary school. Last year, she taught 5th graders.

Last year, in honor of MLK day, she asked her 24 students to write an essay on what Martin Luther King meant to them and why we celebrate his holiday. 18 of the 24 kids, in some form or another, wrote that Dr. King freed the slaves.

Now, maybe it's asking a lot for fifth-graders to know history, but my son, who is in pre-K and goes to a private school (read: majority white) gave this answer when I asked him this morning why we celebrate MLK day: "Because he helped let Robert (his best friend, who is African-American) and me go to the same school, instead of different schools." Very simple, juvenile answer, but hard to argue the accuracy.

That's touching. I have a tear in my eye. Kids only know what is taught to them. I once went to a record shop (yeah back in the day) and the guy had a picture of Dr. King on his wall.
Wouldn't you know it some kid came in and asked if he was a new rap star?

Well, because clearly MLK was more important than GW or Honest Abe.
