Joey Porter and Mike Tomlin: Asshat Little League parents

Hard to believe that. I mean, they seem so eager to follow the rules and not trip or maim anyone on Sundays.

"That would include not smoking cigars in a non-smoking stadium and causing fans to leave their seats, which Tomlin and Porter are said to have done at a playoff game in Butler."

Cheerleaders smoke cigars now?

This could all be true, but Steigerwald could have done a much better job in his reporting.

Every bit of this is from unnamed sources. Given that police were involved, you would think Steigerwald could have at least tried to get confirmation from them. There is not even a mention of trying to get comment from the police, which makes me think he didn't bother.

I don't doubt the story about Porter at all. He has a history of boorish behavior on and off the field. The parts about Tomlin could be true as well. I don't know much about the guy away from the game, but Steigerwald has been around long enough to do a little better job at least trying to get somebody on the record, whether it be police, Porter or Tomlin.

The part about the transfers is true. I found that on other sources.Tomlin's sons are now at Shady Side Academy. Porter's son and nephew transferred to North Allegheny, their local public school, along with Jason Gildon's children. (Gildon, another former Steeler, was the North Catholic coach until December). I found those details online in less than five minutes, which sure makes it look like Steigerwald didn't bother. He is right that these could be ruled as transfers for athletic intent.

If the accusations about Tomlin are true, his credibility takes a serious hit. Porter really has none to damage.

This all brings Bill Cowher's behavior to mind. I was there for high school events when he was there as a parent. He didn't hide, but he also didn't do anything to distract from the game or draw attention to himself no matter how the game was going. I heard from others, including the team's coach, that he was always that way.

Few things weaker than a columnist waiting to rip the **** out of someone until after he doesn't have to deal with them any more. If Tomlin and Porter were a problem, this would've been a hell of a lot more powerful peace if it'd been written while they were wreaking all this havoc on their sons' program. But, then, that would mean alienating them, their sons, the coaching staff, and, likely, their teammates while all of the above are in a position to make your life/job more difficult.

"Oh, they're gone now? Well, lemme give you the real scoop."

Yeah, I doubt Tomlin, or Porter, is gonna get dragged over the coals on it.

Tomlin might get a brief talking-to by Rooney to the effect of, "I don't need this and you don't either, so ease off, OK?"

His first season in Knoxville, Bruce Pearl got kicked out of his son's high school basketball game for getting into it with a ref.

Out in the Bay Area, we were shocked when Bill Romanowski went after a seventh-grader in a flag football game.

Have you not seen how SEC coaches are treated by hometown columnists? They are defended - until they are fired and then ripped to shreds.

If you were principal of a school which was going to truck in dubious sports transfers, wouldn't you give yourself some other name than "Shady Side Academy?"

I mean, was "Shifty Sketchy Prep" taken?

Cute. Actually, it is named for the Shadyside section of Pittsburgh, where the school was founded in the late 1800s.
