Jena 6, Michael Vick, OJ Simpson and Duke Lacrosse are the civil rights rally cry for the current African American Community. Meanwhile another generation of black kids are falling behind in school, black on black crime is horrendous, the nuclear black family is the overwhelming exception to the rule and unemployment and drug abuse rate higher for blacks than any other group except Native Americans living in reservations. But The Reverends Fat Pimp and Booty-Call and their radio talkshow ptichmen are stoking the flames of the ignorant with Jena and Vick.

Are you folks ****ing serious?

Because, as we all know, black folks are incapable of recognizing their own problems and their own real tragedies and must be led to them, not by leaders of their own choosing, but by bigots who have only their best interests at heart.

And that's the problem with people like Abbott. Any time someone associated with civil rights gets involved with something, they think, well "those people can't possibly be right." So instead of actually looking at the facts, they just align themselves with the other side.

Yep, I believe he did.

You're right about that problem re: people immediately dismissing things just because Sharpton or Jackson get behind something without looking at the facts. That seems to cut both ways though, as those two in particular seem to align with one side without looking at the facts.

I think John Carlos' (he of the raced fist at the '68 Olympics) analogy of today's civil rights leaders is pretty spot on:

Carlos feels a sense of frustration with "ministers" and "so-called leaders of the black community," as he puts it, who show up for the big protests in places like Jena, but aren't there when the cameras are off. "These leaders today," he said, "they remind me of tow truck drivers. A tow truck driver is the first one to show up on the scene when there is an accident sometimes. It's true they have [radios] and sometimes show up at the scene before even the police. But can they actually fix the cars? Do they have grease under the fingernails? Will they be there to help the families once the car is towed away?"

And you mean as opposed to the Civil War, or the Emancipation Proclamation, or the Reconstruction, or Jim Crow, or the Scottsboro Boys, or lynchings, or segregation, or Jackie Robinson, or Dr. Martin Luther King, or Malcolm X, or Medgar Evers, or Baldwin or Ellison or Hurston, or the Civil Rights Act, or forced busing, or the March on Washington, or the Black Panthers, or the Watts riots? Jena somehow exceeds all those? And a thousand times a thousand other events and personalities that preceded it?
