I'm naturally a Red Sox fan, so it's a bit hard for me to stick up for A-Rod, but there is value in his numbers even if you assume he's never, ever delivered in the clutch. Winning an extra seven to 12 games during the season is worth $X million, even if he hits .100 during the playoffs.

Far be it from me to stick up for A-Rod -- because I certainly did enjoy bashing him when that was good sport -- but that would be a pretty stupid assumption to make.

For what it's worth, he's actually hit .279 in the playoffs. Below his career regular-season numbers, for sure, but hardly a team-killer.

As I said before, I don't think people allow much room for their perceptions to change. "Even if you assume A-Rod has never, ever delivered in the clutch" is fun for a Red Sox fan to believe -- and nobody gives a **** that it's not true. Print the legend, etc.

Believe it or not, accuracy can be fun to believe, too.

Listen, everyone knows A-Rod collapses in the clutch. He's not a real winner like Luis Sojo or Dickey Simpkins or Bill Wennington.

Any ballot without Henderson this year is fraudulent. The same will be true of any ballot without Maddux in his first year of eligibility. They are no-brainers. I don't see how you can make any coherent argument against either guy, except this need to make sure nobody goes in unanimously.

To me, that is a manipulation rather than honest voting.
