When I first saw the trailer for Valkyrie, I was excited to see it. Then I saw it was rated PG-13.

Yep. I also refuse to see any PG-13 horror movie.

I don't see what difference PG-13 makes, but I'm definitely seeing Valkyrie, just as someone interested in that era.

I thought Lions for Lambs was painfully earnest, but I wasn't bored.

Less violence. No cursing. No nudity. All three are necessary in the horror genre. All PG-13 means is that it's milquetoast pablum designed to scare little Brittneigh two hours before she concludes her date with Carter by spitting out his seed from the window of a Miata.

PG-13 is an absolute killer to me for horror films, mob films, war films or other areas I expect heavy material.

I agree that a PG-13 rating is usually a good way to guarantee that any action film will colossally suck.

Maybe I'll be proven to be incredibly wrong, but I don't think of Valkyrie as an action film or a "war movie." I'm betting every explosion or gunshot in it is in the trailer. I'm hoping the rest of it will be a suspense/thriller.

Not seeing the deeper profundity that is Michael Mann.

I agree he can pretty much define "portentious," but I thought Collateral was the classic thriller-with-a-brain, and I thought The Insider was a brilliant piece of work, especially on the issues of the ethics of our profession. There are moments in Ali and Heat that I really love -- especially the opening Sam Cooke segment in the former.
But I can see where some folks might disagree.

I love Michael Mann, he is probably my favorite director. I have yet to see a film he has done that I didn't like.
