I didn't think there were any alternatives other than I-95 between Richmond and NOVA. That was the point brought up in the massive traffic jam a year ago.

I do see that US 1 closely parallels I-95 the whole way.

Yes. If you get off the Beltway right after National Harbor, you’ll get to 301 in about 20 minutes. Then you’ll reenter Virginia over the Nice Bridge a half-hour after that.

The route I take goes quite a bit out of the way and is farther to drive, but it’s totally worth it to avoid 95. And it’s far enough away to avoid most of the bailout traffic if there’s a debacle on 95.

F.A.A. Outage Highlights Fragility of the Aviation System

Tens of thousands of flights were delayed or canceled around Christmas when frigid weather and storms made travel treacherous. But the weather was mostly fine on Wednesday morning when flights across the country were halted because the Federal Aviation Administration’s system to alert pilots to safety issues went down.

The F.A.A. said on Wednesday night that it had traced the outage to a damaged database file and that there was no evidence that it was caused by a cyberattack. The disruption was the latest example of serious problems in the aviation system and at the F.A.A., the agency responsible for safely managing all commercial air traffic that critics say has long been overworked and underfunded.

$6 toll going from Maryland to Virginia, though. No toll going the other way. I've taken that route a couple of times when I'm going to Baltimore if 95 is a total ****show. There is a ton of local traffic to navigate once you get up toward Waldorf. But if I'm going to see my mom in Lorton, it's way, way out of the way and only used under the worst of circumstances.

I live in Fredericksburg, but my office is in Dahlgren, right there before you get to the Nice Bridge. I swear: The 30 miles from Fred to Dahlgren is absolutely the best 30 mile commute in all of Northern Virginia.

I should clarify: It works very well for me mostly because I can spit on the Wilson Bridge from my house. And mostly when I’m going to Richmond or Williamsburg or points south.

It wouldn’t be worth using it to go anywhere north of, say, Stafford or Fredericksburg.

Another great thing about that route is it takes you past like four Wawas.

That's 360, which heads east to Tappahannock and west to Amelia. 301 is Chamberlayne and is a north-south route.

Burying power lines won't do much good because these lines are fed by aboveground lines on poles somewhere along the grid. Keeping branches trimmed back is still the best preventive measure.

The sun is finally out in full force today and my street is already melted. The water that doesn't evaporate might refreeze overnight and cause some tricky spots, but by tomorrow all the ice will be gone. Should be good the rest of February, but some long-range models are already showing a polar outbreak for the Great Lakes in early March and we'll have to see how far south it goes.

Keep voting for the same party that continues to let things like this happen and you have no one to place but yourself. This is the third extreme winter weather event in the past four years that has shut down significant population centers for a week each time.

Things won't change until they get voted out, which we know they won't because they keep getting elected, but keep worrying about CRT and banning books at the library and preparing thoughts and prayers for the next school shooting that probably would have been prevented if you gave just a ****-poor effort on a law instead of screaming about how no one can come take your guns
