What Dickie leaves out is when he writes about something somebody does that he doesn't think it is appropraite, it's really about that person having done that thing to him and he didn't like it.

Re: gambling. If the states win the pending SCOTUS case, how long before internet gambling becomes legal?

I think a lot of work has to be done on the back end (I love gambling but I'm scared to death of the online sites; too much potential for shenanigans), but I'd say within a few years once the states start feeling that warm sports betting cash coursing through their veins.

My father got kneed in the head when he played in college in the early 1940s. He had a brain scan about 2014 for a possible stroke. The neurologist said, "I see you've had a concussion." It still showed in the brain tissue, 50-some years later.

I clearly got into this thread way too late as we've gone to our typical shenanigans, but this is quite frankly not possible.

I don't know if this is family folklore or you were there and had a neurologist who read the patient history before looking at the scans, but one of the defining characteristics of concussion is it is not visible on any "brain scan" (likely MRI, potentially EEG or even CT, which would not be your scan of choice). Neither current nor previous injuries leave any particular sign unless there's a significant complication or cobormidity, like hemorrhage, cerebral edema or pneumocephalus. It's what makes them so very, very hard to diagnose and study.

The brain is a very touchy, incredibly resilient and poorly understood 3 pound lump that we mostly handwave our understanding of at the level of what, exactly, defines the philosophical nature of cognition. You can do really mysterious things like electroshock therapy that does actually treat incredibly severe, medication-refractory depression with relatively benign side effects. You can disconnect the brain halves or even take out half of a brain in a young enough kid and have relatively few after effects. Heck, in the great book "When Breath Becomes Air" (which all y'all should read), there's a story about how they removed basically the entire spoken language center of a guy's brain because it was invaded by tumor and he cursed throughout the entire conscious surgery, never losing any language functionality. People who say they know what's going on with any neurological process are basically lying to you. That especially includes the researchers at BU, who are sadly really, really poor representatives of what we actually know about CTE and tau protein deposition (because they don't have any freaking control arms of their research, which is science 101). We need good, objective research into this, not a group after grant money and notoriety stating things as fact that are based correlative, not causative, research.

(To be clear, being hit in the head is sub-ideal. Playing with concussions is stupid and should be prevented, and we need really good research into who develops these tau deposits and if there is actual clinical relevance - many changes in cellular structures and deposits, like lipofuscin in heart muscle, are completely benign. BU is just frankly doing science a disservice by how they've handled their findings, in a way that reminds me of missteps like 'viruses cause all cancers' research of the past. And it makes me hurt inside.)

Why do people think that there is some unique threat to the integrity of legalized gambling in the United States when Nevada and many other countries have figured it out?
