I just sent a humorous memoir to several publications for them to potentially print. I've never done anything like this before -- yeah, I cover sports for my paper, but this is different and I'm kinda nervous. I know the odds are a million-to-one against me getting it published, but still.

Anyone have any stories of their own successes or failures in this department?

I once wrote a column just to get a certain subject off my chest, then sent it to my college's student newspaper almost on a whim.

That week, they ran it. I looked later and found out a bunch of student newspapers around the country picked it up off U-Wire and ran it.
