Other than Dontrelle, the Marlins don't have a pitcher that the Mets want.

I thought I was posing this question among a constituency that knows baseball....

So, you're out...

If the Mets were building for three years from now, then, yes, the Mets need to swap rotations. But the Mets are dead-set on winning this year or next. As of today, the Mets have:

A No. 2  in Pedro.
A No. 3 in Glavine.
A boatload of No. 5s in Trachsel, El Duque, Maine, Pelfrey and Bannister.
Yeah... and the Marlins have (right now... not in the future) two twos and three threes.

You said that Dontrelle is the only pitcher the Mets would want.

In slotting where the guys go in the rotation, I think Dintrelle is the only guy beaten out by a Met

Pedro over Dontrelle slightly
Josh Johnson over Glavine
Scott Olsen over Trachsel
Anibel Sanchez over El Duque
Ricky Nolasco over... whoever

If you're building long term, then, yes, you go with the Marlins' rotation.
But, save for Dontrelle, how many post-season games has this rotation won? Pedro's won playoff games. So has Glavine. So has El Duque.

You think Glavine is getting it back?

If he were 34, I'd agree.

El Duque... isn't that like betting on 0/00?

If Glavine comes back... all props to you.

The 2003 Marlins pitchers did pretty well with zero postseason experience....

You really buying that?

If you're betting on futures, then you want the Marlins' starting rotation. The Mets want to win now. Pedro and Glavine can still win games for the Mets this season. El Duque probably ends up going to the bullpen during the playoffs.

Glavine's had one bad month, and you're writing him off as worse than Josh Johnson? ****, man. He's still 11-4. Now I know why A-Rod gets booed in that town ...

(And for the record, Glav hasn't been that bad in the Big Apple the last three years. His first year sucked the whole way through, but he also had five starts where he left with the lead and the bullpen blew it for him. In '04, he had three starts where he left with the lead and they blew it. Last year, he had five more starts where he left with the lead and they blew it. That's 13 wins he lost, which by my count, would put him at 299 if he had lucked out and gotten them all. So **** Braden Looper. And **** Armando Benitez.)

I'm saying... the Marlins are better pitchers now.

What do you think the ERAs of Glavine and El Duque will be for the rest of the year?

The Marlins have a great-looking young staff, but the playoffs are a different animal. It's about not getting rattled if you walk a couple of hitters, or figuring out a way to get by if you don't have your good curveball. It's not the same as pitching against the Philllies in July. Maybe the Marlins' kids can handle that pressure, but I need more than half a season of good ball for me to trust that they can (Dontrelle not included.) If I need someone to find a way to give me six good innings in October, I'd take Pedro, Glavine, El Duque and maybe even Trachsel over a bunch of young arms (and heads).

Thanks for that thought-out response.

I simply have none of that faith in anyone other than Pedro.... and we are also making the huge assumption that Pedro is healthy from here on out.

So are we discounting the first three months when he went 11-2 before July? Glav's never been a great second-half pitcher, but he usually picks it back up in September (although he's so-so in the playoffs, like Maddux.)

Holy ****, I said almost the same thing and you debated the merits of my post(s)! What in the name of The Nolan Ryan For Jim Fergosi trade is going on here?

That's a 4.97 ERA.

I thought you sort of ignored.... or perhaps weren't aware of... how well they are pitching this year.

You're right about Glavine's ERA in July. My fault, as I mis-read the stats.

I know they boast an impressive rotation. For a team with a payroll of $0.57, they're winning because of pitching.

If you play it perfectly... you can keep those guys for three seasons with that sort of payroll, right?

One thing I do know, is that I am looking forward to Pete's start tonight. It doesnt seem like he has been out for a month. They have more then held their own without him too.

John Maine responding the way he has with a potential spot in the rotation on the line is very nice to see. Pelfrey too for the most part.  The confidence Maine and Pelfrey seem to portray on the mound, compared to what Soler was demonstrating in his first few starts, is night and day. Soler looked scared to be there. Pelfrey and Maine look like they are on a mission.  Just seem to have the look of confidence.

Depends if the players win arbitration cases...

I have been more impressed with John Maine than I have with Mike Pelfrey. Pelfrey has shown the ability to work around a hit or two an inning. Maine's been lights out his last two starts, especially Wednesday against the Cubs.

Wednesday, top of the sixth, one out. Runners on first and second, and the hottest friggin' hitter on the planet, Aramis Ramirez at bat. Maine struck Ramirez out with a high fastball and got the next hitter, Jaque Jones, to ground out to second.

How many rookies do that? In a tie game?
