noo yawk
so little shockey has apparently beaten us down. unbeknownst to him, we're about to take him to check out a few "pre-owned" (used) elantras tonight for a h.s. grad present. truth is, we need a second car to help with all the driving around mrs. shockey must do to cover my crippled butt.

anyway, anyone here have any experience with these cars? i've long bee a honda/toyota man. truth is, money -- we have none -- drives this purchase (about 10 g's). but i don't want the boy driving an accident waiting to happen, either.

thoughts, peeps?

First car I owned was a new 99 Elantra. It was really a very good car, especially for the money, and it's got a great warranty. I'd still be driving it into the ground now if some douchebag kid hadn't made an illegal turn into me and totalled the damn thing.

And I've rented newer Elantras twice recently, and still found it a perfectly good car, especially for a young'un.

My wife has an '06 Elantra and has had no problems with it

Cheap, reliable car
A '99 Elantra
Douchebag totaled it.

Funny you mention Hyundai.

We're renting a Sonata because our Toyota's in the shop for repairs.

Nothing wrong with it but it ain't in the Honda/Toyota league.

But as you say, if money's driving the decision, an Elantra is probably OK for round the town stuff.

Come on, O Doctor!
You're better than that nonsense.

**** me in the ass.
I made a counting error.
I will now feel shame. :-\

O, Doc, be sad not
Khartoum soon will forget you
Smile, smile, smile, smile, Squier

Very, very good car for the money. Slightly more horsepower than comparable Corolla or Civic at way less money. They don't hold value as well as a Corolla or Civic, either, which is good news for the shopper.

I have 199,000 on my Honda Civic. I'm shooting for a quarter million.

Can any Hyundai touch that?

Hyundai's quality is improving. The design quality on the forthcoming Genesis sedan is such that the body is 14 percent stiffer than a BMW 5-series.

@shockey: If you're gonna get the kid an Elantra do it now. The Genesis coupe will be rear-drive, over 300HP and well under 30 grand.

Base model has a 223HP turbo-4 (base model?!?) for under 20 grand, upscale model has a 310HP V6 for about 26 large. He finds out about that and you'll never hear the end of it.

I have wanted a Hyundai Santa Fe for so long. I can taste it. I've even priced a few around me. But since my credit ranking is somewhere south of poor, I'm screwed for a while.

We have two -- a 2000 and a 2006 -- and think they are great cars, especially for the price. I have had no issues with either one. Although I haven't needed to put as many miles on it recently, I have driven the 2000 pretty hard and it is going strong. Probably will keep it until it dies.

Have you looked at their Tucson? I got one in '05. They're not as long as a Santa Fe, less cargo hatch, but a great compact SUV. In '05, the cab of the Tucson (headspace, legroom, etc.) was actually larger than the Santa Fe. Not sure if that is still true with the new design of the Santa Fe. One thing about Hyundai's - they are safe vehicles, with airbags everywhere.

I know someone who has the Tucson and whatever the largest one is. Said he loved them both. I don't really need the added size of the Santa Fe...but it seems rounder and cuter. :D

You can have a blue 2002 one with a busted a/c compressor. No reasonable offer refused. :(

Overall, it has been a fairly sturdy car. Hopefully the later models have been better adapted for the US market, with all the controls going the right way.

mrs. shockey is signing the papers as we type on a 2005 elantra with 33,000 miles on it. $10,000. no money down, five-year payoff for $282 a month.

insurance will be about $600 a year. if payments/insurance cost us/boy shockey $325 a month or so, we'll just have to make it work, i suppose. when you're already drowning in debt, does it really matter how far over your head the water is?

other rationalization: until two years ago, when i stopped driving, we were a two car-payment family and survived. so we're back where we began... with college payments straight ahead. yikes!!!

Hyundai Tucson=Kia Sportage

Based on the Elantra.

Hyundai came out about the same time as the Yugo (late 80s) and I always seem to equate the two in my mind for that reason. Is Hyundai's reliability as improved as everyone says? I may buy a small one next time.
