Hello everyone.

Which newspapers still have a humor column? Not humorous essays or editorials, but containing a joke or two.

We have humorous editorials all the time. I fear it's not intentional, though.

Other than Dave Barry, I don't think there are very many humor columns in newspapers.

I blame sodoku.

My paper is still running reruns of Dave Barry columns. He stopped writing when? 2004? I'm just wondering at what point we start getting reruns of the reruns.

(That said, if we stopped running the column, our readership would have a fit. I know this because of one instance where we went a week without it, we fielded a plethora of calls from an angry mob.)

Sorry, I meant to say - the type that have just one line each time. A joke, words of wisdom... anything like that.

When I was a student at U-Md., we had a humor columnist who ran biweekly. He had his column the entire year; I had mine for the bulk of the spring semester.

Many people on campus looked forward to his column so we could laugh our asses off. I was definitely one of them. I had one of the two "graveyard" shift columns (Fridays when a lot of students have either literally or figuratively started their weekends and don't pay much attention to the paper).

Granted, I still developed a pretty huge audience in my own right, but I definitely enjoyed reading his column. I made it a point to read it whenever it came up.

As far as one-liners or occasional jokes are concerned, I haven't seen too many such columns in newspapers these days. It'd be nice to see it again.

Thanks to everyone who responded, especially JackFinarelli. The Oregonian is perfect. If anyone knows of any more, feel free to add to the list.

If you are looking for humor columns that are "sports-centric",

"Sideline Chatter" by Dwight Perry in the Seattle Times (4 times a week)

"Random Evidence of a Cluttered Mind" by Greg Cote in the Miami Herald (Sundays)

"Week in Review" by David Whitley at AOL Fanhouse (Sundays but sometimes not posted until late)

"Deep Thoughts Cheap Shots and Bon Mots" by Scott Ostler in the SF Chronicle (Sundays)

"Morning Bytes" by Frank Fitzpatrick in the Philly Inquirer (usually on Thursdays)

Bill Simmons, Kornheiser (once upon a time), Chad.

Reggie Hayes out of the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel still writes a "cheap shots" column which has been known to be picked up by a few other papers. He is pretty effortless, which makes it work, of course, I work with him, so I'm a bit biased. The competition tried to follow suit, but it's cringeworthy more often than not. Actually, it's always cringeworthy.

We've been over this one before...it is just once a year.
Everyone has their own opinion, but I think Collier's Trite Tophy is masterful (and not just because I work w/ the guy):

My small paper has one, but it's only funny if you're over the age of 65 and severely out of touch with modern times.

Sadly[?]... numbers 2 and 3 will have to be removed from JackFinarelli's list.

We still run a speak up for people who live in the area, so it might as well be a humor column. One lady sent this in.

"I just moved to Rocky Mount, and I must say, I'm disappointed. Everywhere I go there are orange trash bags lined up every 100 yards or so filled with trash. I'm not sure who is throwing this garbage on to the road, but I'm doing my very best to pick up these bags and put them in the proper place. Come on Rocky Mount, we can do better."

If you haven't figured it out, the orange trash bags are the roadside service our inmates perform. They pick the trash up and someone throws the garbage away a couple days later. We laughed about that Speak Up for months.
