Hockey HOF reporter to NHL star: 'Why are you so pissy?'

Let's cut to the chase here. Longtime hockey reporter Jim Matheson snapped back at Oilers star Leon Draisaitl (who my hockey friends tell me is very good). This back-and-forth has garnered nearly 2 million views, which is crazy to think about.



It really seemed like an innocent enough question at first until Draisaitl escalated things. Matheson apparently decided he didn't enjoy the response and the gloves came off.

Putting aside Draisaitl's immaturity. ... he did answer the question. I think it's a bad look for the reporter doing that, "Why are you so pissy?" You're not entitled to the answer you want or something insightful.

I don't know Matheson but regardless of his tenure or stature, he put himself into the story and that's no good. Should have asked his second question first, about Draisaitl's frustration coming out in the last game. Then maybe build on that. First question was junk, asking for the No. 1 reason to a losing streak. You're leaving the door open for a one-word answer -- "everything" -- and it might not be far from the truth. If the player doesn't want to expand on that, so be it.

I don’t know much about Draisaitl off ice, but Edmonton hockey media are generally a weird group. They always back management, which has been **** for many years and multiple regimes, and a guy like Matheson will invoke his connection to the 80s dynasty at every opportunity. Within the last year or so he was upset on Twitter because an Oiler wore 98 in camp, which disrespected Gretzky/history.

Who does this serve? Does Matheson really believe that any of his readers care about someone giving him a short answer about a losing streak? Does he believe that reaction will help with his relationship with Draisaitl and his teammates? I hope this was just a case of two people having bad days as opposed to a hockey writer thinking that he is more important than he actually is.

On Montreal radio, Gord Miller pointed out that Leon can’t exactly say “we have AHL goaltending and yes I’m frustrated.” That’s the most obvious problem with the Oilers and it’s a management problem. But those guys like Matheson not only guard the Hockey Men, they see themselves as Hockey Men.
