You knew I was clicking on this thread.

I'm surprised. Hines was always one of the Steelers I actually respected, even as I hated him. :(

Steelers and Georgia don't mix well in the offseason.
Nope, and neither does anyone from the University of Georgia.

Damon Evans is disappointed in Hines.

What are the chances oop can ignore this thread?

None, since I was going to start one if there wasn't already one going. More proof that this is arguably the worst group of human beings in team history.

But watch. Ward will apologize and say all the right things. Maybe he'll even cry for the cameras. The Steelers will say they are deeply concerned by his behavior, or something to that effect, and then ignore it. If he gets a suspension, Mike Tomlin will answer every question about Ward's absence by saying, "The standard is the standard" and most of the fans will forget it the next time he catches a touchdown pass.

It seems the only thing that can really get the Steelers to turn on a player is if he refuses to play the game, or if he is just too stupid to do it, like Santonio Holmes. I'm more and more convinced that their dumping him had nothing to do with any form or morality. It is because he was publicly unapologetic about his behavior.

Never mind that their tough stance really accomplished nothing except perhaps costing them a Super Bowl. It certainly shouldn't be enough to cover up the black eye this group of players keeps giving them.

Hines Ward is old. That's almost certainly a bigger sin to the Steelers than the DUI is.

Also true. Honestly, if they had held on to Holmes and somehow signed him to an extension (incredibly unlikely after the suspension), Ward's job would have been in jeopardy without this. As it stands, he is still one of the three best receivers on that team.

Hines was just lookin' out for his reality TV career...can't make it to Celeb Rehab without some sort of addiction.

You can't condone drinking and driving. But how many people on this message board have been a) popped for DUI or b) said a few prayers after the nights they weren't caught?

was just about to post exactly this. wow, when did this board become so instantly judgmental? i'm sure not condoning ANYONE getting ticketed for DUI. but if it is his first such offense, i'm surely grateful no one was hurt and willing to believe/pray this isn't his normal driving behavior. crap, i certainly have friends who were pulled over and handed a DUI ticket. and it's embarrassing to no end. it didn't turn any of these friends into immediate scumbags in my eyes. just incredibiv stupid. and lucky.

now, if we learn this is ward's nop and he just finally got caught, then yeah, what an a--hole.

One of the nicest professional athletes I have ever dealt with.

I've thought the same when dealing with him. Doesn't excuse this. Kind of silly to assume this was the first time he had done this.

shockey, none of this is new. There are a significant number of posters on this board who are desperate to rip any Steeler about anything, so that is part of the reaction.

Personally, I've never had much tolerance for DUI, so that's where my reaction comes from.

i get the venom for stillersnation. this still caught me off-guard. and most of y'all know how i feel about the dangers of drunk-driving. and, yes, if it turns out hines ward is indeed a serial drunk driver, by all means string 'em up by his thumbs....

Well, then I trust you never slipped off the hook at a checkpoint some night at 1:30 a.m.

Because I did. And I never drove while borderline after that. But I have empathy for those who get caught.

And Hines Ward is the same person, good or bad, as he was before this happened.

And Ben Roethlisberger is the same person he was before that night in Georgia. And James Harrison is the same person he was before he smacked his girlfriend in the face with a cell phone.

And no, I've never had reason to be nervous at a checkpoint. I don't drink and drive. Ever.

I root for laundry and I don't kid myself into thinking any other team in the NFL is any better the way you and many others do.
