Help me get the most out of my phone

I just upgraded from an old Blackberry with a trackball to a new Android-powered HTC Desire. I like it so far, but I know I'm far from the most tech savvy person on the board and I'm far from maximizing it's potential, so I figure others here can tell me all the cool stuff it can do to make life easier for a sports journalist.

I've used the voice recorder app and that works great. Email, Twitter and all that is handy and I got a lacrosse stat keeping app I'm going to try out at a game in a couple of hours. Any other, preferably free, apps a journalist should get?

Also, I can't figure out how to cut and paste in Gmail.

I say get HootSuite, it's free and if you have a HootSuite account you can post to Facebook and Twitter at the same time, helps save me time a lot when I am posting to all my different feeds at once.

I say get HootSuite, it's free and if you have a HootSuite account you can post to Facebook and Twitter at the same time, helps save me time a lot when I am posting to all my different feeds at once.

The HTC's come with an app called Friend Stream, which does the same thing.

If you can afford it, check out this folding bluetooth keyboard. It's easier to use than most netbook keyboards, and basically turns your phone into a pocket laptop. I've got one that I use for a smaller Palm Treo that I use for typing up notes or transcribing quotes without having to lug around a laptop. I'm not comfortable enough to write full length stories on it, but it's a useful tool.

Because? Any Droid phone requires data package and thus tweeting and posting to Facebook costs nothing extra.

Why give the newspaper something for free?

If they want you to post to twitter or facebook, they can give a phone stipend to pay for part of it.

Ding, ding, ding. You've got to start somewhere and like it or not the posting to social networks is going to be part of the future. Doing it now allows you to put it on a resume.

There is also the matter of doing the best job you can even if the paper stiffs you.
