Hoppin' John and a good Cabernet.
After that, buffalo chicken dip and a good Coke Zero.

After that, dunno what's next, but I hope I make it to midnight before the oncoming facepla
Glad somebody mentioned Hoppin' John. Black-eyed peas are a must on NYE.

Hey East Coasters, what is 2024 like? Do we have flying cars yet?

On a less fun note - was attending a memorial gathering for a friend who passed a few months past and while I was there learned that another friend died suddenly a couple of days ago while traveling the country. It probably made me more reflective on 2023 this eve than the usual "Let's Kick Some Ass in 2024!" that is my usual mode. I think it made for a great FB post though. Nice to really dig in on some writing now and then.

I think if you were invited to a party above the puking masses below it would be pretty cool. You could take it all in, not freeze your ass off, or have someone pee on your leg.

From what I've heard, NYE at Times Square is best when it's actually cold enough to have a light, dry snow. When it's dank and damp like tonight, it has a mildewy smell, which sucks. But still a lot better than slushy rain.

Back before the earth cooled, one of the perks of working at the Times (on 43rd) was watching the ball drop from the terrace.

Made kümmelweck last night.

It looks like pure hell.

Everyone I have ever spoken to that has been there says it is pure hell.

And yet, every year it is a massive crowd. I don't get it.

I went once in my 20s. Let’s just say it hasn’t happened since.

The biggest problem now is getting the kids to go to bed and not staying up until Midnight.

My son's first job out of college was at a big PR firm that had its offices above Times Square. They did indeed have a big New Year's Eve party but the catch was that once you entered it, you couldn't leave until like 3 a.m. when the coast outside cleared. My son didn't go, on the grounds this would cramp his style.

Taco dip & chips with homemade wings on the cast iron and roasted.

In bed after midnight only because one of our dogs went missing because he snuck into our bedroom and got under the covers without my wife's knowledge at 11 and when I went to bed around 11:45, I couldn't find him, which led to me walking outside at midnight calling his name, my son yelling for him and he finally wiggled out from under the blankets and scratched on the bedroom door to be let out.

Damn dog. Happy New Year!

I went to Times Square once, when I was a kid (maybe 10 to 12ish). My enduring memory is of my dad yelling at me and my brothers to stay close to him, and my grandfather yelling at all the drunk people.

Chicken Tenders for dinner before a Ducks-Oilers hockey game. Typical mismatch of a good team playing well and a bad team playing bad. Sent out a few MESSENGER posts wishing faraway friends a Happy New Year. Bed just after midnight, which is normal for me. Nothing special. However, we leave Wednesday for a 2-week Panama Canal cruise, and Friday is my 72nd birthday. Life is good in the midst of my 10th year of retirement after a 44-year newspaper career.

I've been through the Panama Canal a couple of times on Uncle Sam's dime. Enjoy the views.
