Us and Them, Pink Floyd. Too easy.

Here's another easy one. Someone is gonna knock this down on sight, but it tells an entire sad story in just a few lines.

Last night I was out driving
Coming home at the end of the working day
I was riding alone through the drizzling rain
On a deserted stretch of a county two-lane
When I came upon a wreck on the highway

Now there was blood and glass all over
And there was nobody there but me
As the rain tumbled down hard and cold
I seen a young man lying by the side of the road
He cried Mister, won't you help me please

An ambulance finally came and took him to Riverside
I watched as they drove him away
And I thought of a girlfriend or a young wife
And a state trooper knocking in the middle of the night
To say your baby died in a wreck on the highway

Sometimes I sit up in the darkness
And I watch my baby as she sleeps
Then I climb in bed and I hold her tight
I just lay there awake in the middle of the night
Thinking 'bout the wreck on the highway

Springsteen

Springsteen

"Wreck on the Highway", from The River. I saw him perform it on that tour. He sat on the edge of the stage with an acoustic guitar and played it solo. An amazing moment in time for me.

You're up, Dan. Feed us something harder.

How's this?
The hero is exposed when
His crimes are brought to the light of day
Won't be feelin' sorry, sorry, sorry
On the judgement day.

It wasn't me who said
There'll be a price to pay
And I won't feel bad at all
When the hero takes a fall
When the hero takes a fall
(Hero takes a fall) oh no.

Your mother told you stories
You substitute with girls who tell you more
Suddenly you sight a fancy chance
Since love is at your door.

“Hero Takes a Fall,” the best song by the Bangles.

History repeats the old conceits
The glib replies the same defeats
Keep your finger on important issues
With crocodile tears and a pocketful of tissues
I'm just the oily slick
On the windup world of the nervous tick
In a very fashionable hovel

I hang around dying to be tortured
You'll never be alone in the bone orchard
This battle with the bottle is nothing so novel

So in this almost empty gin palace
Through a two-way looking glass
You see your Alice

You know she has no sense
For all your jealousy
In a sense she still smiles very sweetly

Charged with insults and flattery
Her body moves with malice
Do you have to be so cruel to be callous

And now you find you fit this identikit completely
You say you have no secrets
And then leave discreetly

I might make it California's fault
Be locked in Geneva's deepest vault
Just like the canals of Mars and the Great Barrier Reef
I come to you beyond belief

My hands were clammy and cunning
She's been suitably stunning
But I know there's not a hope in Hades
All the laddies cat call and wolf whistle
So called gentlemen and ladies
Dog fight like rose and thistle

I got a feeling
I'm going to get a lot of grief
Once this seemed so appealing
Now I am beyond belief

My favorite picture of you
Is the one where you're staring
Straight into the lens

It's just a Polaroid shot
Someone took on the spot
No beginning, no end

It's just a moment in time
You can't have back
You never left but your bags were packed
Just in case

My favorite picture of you
Is bent and faded
And it's pinned to my wall
Oh, and you were so angry

It's hard to believe
We were lovers at all
There's a fire in your eyes
You've got your heart on your sleeve
A curse on your lips, but all I can see
Is beautiful

My favorite picture of you
Is the one where
Your wings are showing
Oh, and your arms are crossed
Your fists are clenched
Not gone but going

Just a stand up angel
Who won't back down
Nobody's fool, nobody's clown
You were smarter than that

My favorite picture of you
Is the one where
It hasn't rained yet
Oh and as I recall
Came a winter squall
And we got soaking wet

It's a thousand words
In the blink of an eye
The camera loves you
And so do I

Guy Clark.

Title cut of the album, so another easy one for Clark fans.

The back story from Texas Monthly. The Story Behind Guy Clark's "My Favorite Picture of You"

Here is Guy performing the song in his basement man cave - he was a luthier and built guitars here. It was also where he'd write songs and occasionally do interviews at home. It's worth mentioning in case you don't hit the link above that Guy wrote this song about his wife who had died four or five years previously, and that he knew he was dying of cancer as he recorded it.

And now one from the Editors' Hall of Fame ...

No, I cannot forget from where it is that I come from

And, what the hell, while we're at it ...

Only time will tell if we stand the test of time

John Mellencamp, "Small Town."

"If I seem a little crazy, well, it's just because I am,
but that aint no call to talk behind my back.
Sometimes I go de-railin' when it's chaos in my mind,
but all in all my wheels are mainly on the track...
settle down, settle down,
Baby love, my baby love,
Don't quit your faith in me."
