This is a weird story if only because there appears to be no logical reason to explainthe magazine's motivation here. An investigative reporter did a big piece on Russia, with some damaging on-the-record quotes from a former KGB agent, and the executives decided not to publish the story online and not to distribute the printed version in Russia.

I remember that story but can't remember where it was. Maybe Vanity Fair, because I get that but haven't read GQ in awhile.

I think there's some real fear about the personal security of the Newhouses. The family estate is only a few miles away from the homes of Russian mafia types over the border in Pennsylvania. These are the kinds of people who have to get waivers to install bulletproof doors at their houses (I know one of the housing inspectors).
