Gone With the Wind ... gone

HBO Max has pulled "Gone With the Wind" from its lineup. After it sits in the corner and thinks about what it's done, and writes an essay, maybe it can come back out.

The spokesperson added that when the film returns to HBO Max, it "will return with a discussion of its historical context and a denouncement of those very depictions," and will be presented "as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed."
"If we are to create a more just, equitable and inclusive future, we must first acknowledge and understand our history," the spokesperson said.

It’s amazing the fall from grace this movie has had in the last 25 years. When I was young I remember it consistently considered perhaps the best movie of all time. Surely we have a long way to go, but the world has certainly changed.

To the amazement of my mom, I read the book in fifth grade.

I'm sure it was a landmark picture in the 1930s, but at this point there are just soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many movies which surpass it.

It's like honoring the first guy to dunk a basketball up there with Jordan and Vince Carter, just because he was first.

I realize movies today have gone far beyond what GWTW did - technically, box office wise etc. So watching it 40 or more years later you wonder what the big whoop is - but it was a moon shot of a movie at the time. I thought Citizen Kane was vastly superior and still holds up decades later - so much good stuff in that movie, the plotting, the camera work, the sets. Hell, Cold Mountain is a better story of the Civil War than GWTW.

Agree with all of this.

Still: Just because it was groundbreaking in its time does not make it still today one of the greatest films of all time. Roger Bannister did a landmark thing, but he's not today one of the all-time best mile runners ...

And I'm fine with fixing warning labels to most old popular art. Art reflects the age in which was made. Better that than disappearing it down the memory hole.

That said, there are some things so racist they need to be accessible only to scholars in an archive somewhere. Song of the South, Heckle and Jeckle, Amos n Andy, etc.

The first time I saw it was in eighth grade
We had a field trip to see it at the Madison Theatre, one of the glorious, ornate movie houses in downtown Detroit
The big story was half the class got thrown out of the place for smoking in the bathrooms during the intermission

There are magnificent scenes in Gone With the Wind, but it's so long and so tedious after the damn war ends. It's not a good sign for your art when a human male feels bored watching circa 1939 Vivian Leigh.
