NEEDHAM – GateHouse Media plans to stop publishing seven free weeklies in the state as the company seeks to focus on its other newspapers in the communities those papers serve. The papers that will close at the end of the month include the Plymouth Bulletin, East Bridgewater Star, West Bridgewater Times, Whitman Times, Hanson Town Crier, Dennis Pennysaver and Yarmouth Pennysaver. The company’s Wicked Local Web sites and other daily or weekly newspapers will continue serve these communities. The company – which owns several daily papers in Massachusetts, including The Patriot Ledger, and dozens of weeklies in the state – says the impact of the closings on advertisers and employees would be relatively small.</blockquote>How soon until the whole company hits the iceberg?

That whole company, like most of the industry, has already jumped the shark.

Scripps started the trend of shutting down papers. Like sheep, others follow.
