First of all, let me say that I have never visited Hattiesburg Miss, so I can't confirm whether this is true or not. But I will throw it out there for thought. My best friend is from down there. In fact he didn't live far from Favre up the road, and he saw the Ed Werder piece on ESPN where he interviewed Favre and noticed that the shot of Werder at the end of the story appeared to be at a golf course nowhere near Hattiesburg. In fact he said, it's about an hour south of Hattiesburg. And I am guessing there are plenty of hotels in Hattiesburg with low demand for rooms. So it sounds like Ed's chilling on the job allegedly.

This is no big deal. If Werder goes out on a piece, he most certainly will have nice digs. It comes with his position.
You should visit the Coast sometime. It's really nice down there and if you can get in a round of golf, there are at least 10 really good courses spread between the Coast and Hattiesburg.

Favre lives about 10 minutes from the city limits of Hattiesburg, and there are several very good golf courses there. They aren't as well-known as the ones on the Coast or around Jackson, but they're still pretty solid.

Also, I wouldn't assume that hotel rooms in Hattiesburg are going begging right now. There is a huge National Guard/Army Reserve training facility nearby that handles units from all over the country, and they usually keep the occupancy level of area hotels at a pretty high rate.

Why is it that everyone seems to think of Hattiesburg, Miss., as this rustic little burg stuck out in the middle of nowhere?

It's actually a good-sized city of 55,000 just in the city limits, another 20-25,000 in the immediate outlying areas, and probably 75-80,000 in the surrounding counties.

Hattiesburg sits at the intersection of three major four-lane highways, Amtrak runs right through downtown and there's even a small airport nearby.

You can drive from there to New Orleans in under 2 hours; it's 4 1/2 hours to Memphis, 6 hours to Nashville, and 7 to Houston and Atlanta. Whatever you can say about it, it's not remote.

Sorry, but this is a real sore subject with me. Hattiesburg may not be New York or L.A., but it ain't Mayberry, either.
