Has anyone else been hit? The last week has been absolutely miserable for me. I’m probably past the worst of it, but I have a lingering cough and fatigue.

Here's Why the Flu Is Especially Bad This Year

SonOfQuant got it, right as he was staring down a final in a course he was dicey on. He was fine a few days later (after some Tamiflu, etc.) but it scares the **** out of you when your kid’s off like that and has the flu.

I got a shot, but I’m leery ... I’m on-campus this spring, with 250+ students.

I had it starting last Saturday (the 6th) and had the worst of it until about Wednesday. I still feel it though — coughing in the morning and exercise is pretty difficult. My wife was a couple days behind me and she had it a lot worse, kept her out of the office all week.

One thing I have noticed is that there’s much more recognition of the need to stay home if you’re sick, primarily to protect your co-workers.

Our area has had two schools close for the next week because a third of their entire district didn't show. The word is a couple more are probably going to follow suit.

UAB Hospital has cut way back on elective surgeries. They're very short on beds as a result of the number of flu cases here.

Our house has so far managed (knock wood) to avoid the plague.

I got a shot. I'm hoping the fact that I'm embalmed with booze on the weekends will help.

I get a shot every year. Have avoided the flu for at least 20-some years. *Knock on wood*

I joke about this, but I didn't get the shot three years ago and I ended up with a three-week flu that almost ended me. It was over, then it was back. It was over, then it was back. Miserable. Still the only three sick days I've ever taken as a professional, and that's only because I had a doctors' note. I can deal with colds, but the flu was the worst. That's why I get the shot. Is it 100 percent effective? Nothing is. But I feel like there's less chance I'll get the three-week death flu if I get the shot.

I was on my ass for a week with it just before Christmas. I can't remember the last time I missed work prior, but I have never before felt so weak and miserable.

I always get the shot. If you work primary care and are exposed to everything, it's cheap insurance. Can't hurt, might help.

I had not had the flu since I was in college (1993, I think), but I started feeling bad about halftime of the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. Had fever and chills that night, then sore throat, congestion, cough and diarrhea for about a week after. I finally just got over all the symptoms earlier this week. In other words, until about Jan. 14, I was literally sick every day of 2018.

My wife caught it right behind me and is just now getting over it as well. It sucks.

I got a shot for the first time last month. Not sure it'll work or not. I've never had the flu.

I’ve had it twice and it was an ass-kicking both times. Even at my tender age (relative to you!) I am not inclined to risk it, and I get the shot every year. Guy at our church owns a pharmacy and gives free shots to any and all on the Sunday of the Feast of St. Luke.

Never had the shot. Runny nose for 2-3 days is all I ever get. The "flu" (ass-kicking aches/pains/discomfort) may as well be a UFO to me.

I had something that laid me up for a day in 9th grade, after I got home from delivering newspapers in the rain. Was the day of Anthony Davis' 6 touchdowns for the Greatest Team of All Time against Notre Dame. Maybe that incident immunized me forevermore.

No one in our family has gotten shots yet this year.
The wife - an FNP - said most of the shots this year are ineffective against many of the strains out there.

And NOT getting a shot is absolutely, 100% ineffective against any strain o_O
