Which is it? Dave Smith is a First Team All-American or Dave Smith is a first team All-American?

I've seen both styles; just wondering which is correct. If this has been posted before, please direct me to the thread.

Thanks!

If you use the full name and do it thusly:

Uconn was named to the Dunkin Donuts Connecticut Basketball Coaches Association All-State First Team, I would leave it up as a proper name.

In any other case, I would put it down.

I would say first-team All-American.

Remember to use hyphens if an adjective (first) modifies a noun (team).

I've always thought all-American looked like a typo. Kind of like "champing at the bit".

How about saying he's an All-American, not using "first team." Can't we assume that if you're called an All-American, you're not a second- or third-teamer or else you'd be referred to that way?

He was named a first-team All-American.
He finished on the All-American first team.

You must not read many press releases sent out by SIDs.

Just because they pretend not to know the difference doesn't mean we have to.

All-American, second-team All-American, third-team All-American, honorable-mention All-American, couldn't throw it in the ocean with a bazooka.

We're lowercase, and that makes sense to me, but as with all style things, it's what your place says it is, and then what you do every single time.

If you have any question about it -- and I'm not just talking about first-team, etc. -- go downstyle.
