It's why college football - or at least its "system" of determining a champion - is a complete joke. As bad as NASCAR allowing the cars other than those in the Chase to continue running.

Forget Cincy-Boise. Bring on TCU-Boise. Gotta have two non-BCS schools here to maximize embarrassment.

Every other division has a playoff. The system works, especially in division 3. The best teams make it the furthest. Period. End of story. The BCS sucks.

And what happens if the playoffs give us Boise State vs. Cincinnati in the title game? Lower ratings than Florida-Texas or USC-Penn State. Which is what would happen anyway. It's not like going to a playoff is going to make a hill of difference in perception of those cuddly-wuddly mid-majors.

And as long as the school presidents are firmly opposed to a playoff system -- and they have for many years and show no signs of relenting -- all this anger towards the BCS is misplaced, because some form of it is as close as we'll get to a playoff system in the current environment, no matter what we might want. Hell, I'd like to see a playoff too, but I'm not holding my breath. The BCS, warts and all, gives us a better shot at a national champion than the old-school system which would send No. 1 UCLA to play No. 7 Iowa in the Rose, No. 2 Georgia to play No. 5 Notre Dame in the Sugar, No. 3 Texas to play No. 6 Nebraska in the Cotton and No. 4 Virginia to play unranked Mississippi State in the Citrus.

And you think things are bad for the mid-majors now? In 1985, Fresno State went undefeated. Their reward? A California Bowl matchup at their home stadium with Bowling Green and a final ranking of 16th in the AP poll.

If Cincinnati beats two stud programs in the quarters and semis of an 8-team playoff, they are totally legitimized in a title game.

Interest is greater.

Not to mention the three bowl games that would join the Big 4 as significant entities.

Among hardcore fans? Possibly. Among the casual fans for whom the title game might be their only exposure to college football in any given season? They'll look at the matchup, wonder how long Idaho has had its own college and why the hell the Bengals are playing college football, then turn to CSI: Duluth.

Playoffs don't generate that much interest for mid-major or small-market teams. Super Bowls and World Serieses with less-than-sexy teams involved get (relatively) poor ratings, no matter what they had to do to get there.
