Good piece in Time magazine this week about how some small colleges are talking about banding together a coaltion to refuse to report numbers to U.S. News & World Report as a way of busting up the current college admissions madness.
I don't think it's such a bad idea. I began college just over a decade ago, and I don't recall once consulting U.S. News, Princeton Review or anyone else. I visited some schools in-state and picked the one that had my major and where I felt most comfortable, based on my campus experience and word of mouth. A lot of today's kids would gasp at that.
I dunno ... seems like U.S. higher education could get back to its real ideals without the rankings. But they're so pervasive now that I'm not sure we'll ever be rid of them.
