Favorite old flicks

Tired of the current crop of films of late, I've been rediscovering some great old H'wood films -- had never seen Lawrence of Arabia until this weekend and was floored by what a great piece of work it was. So, friends, point me in the direction of your fave
old films (say, pre-1970) that I should check out.

I've always dug Twelve Angry Men, Going My Way, South Pacific, Sgt. York, Midway, and of course It's a Wonderful Life. Lawrence now tops the list.

So what's next in my queue?

A Bridge Too Far is a good one. To Hell And Back is another, if you like war flicks.

lots of great character- and dialogue-driven black and whites that are pure gold.

it happened one night is a good one.

if you have a vcr (ha), get your hands on "you're a big boy now" ... my favorite movie.

I am addicted to Turner Classic Movies. I have too many favorite classic movies to list, but I definitely include Citizen Kane, The Thin Man (and its sequels), Now Voyager, To Have and Have Not, It Happened One Night, Metropolis and African Queen on my list.

Good list to start off with, though must resist the siren call, as this is outing territory, and shouldn't go too far.

Duck Soup remains the greatest comedy in cinematic history, however.

I'm going to pounded for this, but...
While I enjoy Citizen Kane, I just never saw a reason to put it up there in the pantheon of "greatest ever" that seems the
popular sentiment.
And I also don't get Bogart. Dude just creeps me out for some reason, so I can enjoy African Queen but my dislike of Bogart just distracts me too much.

Gotta check out some of these others, tho.

Oooh. Marty. There we go. Have never seen it, but always hear about it 'round Oscar time. Next on my list. Good call on Flight of the Phoenix, too, though I've seen it many times. Quaid, Ribisi et al need to be shot for what they did to it in the recent remake.

Any fans of Breakfast at Tiffanys? Another I've never seen, not sure if I should.

For some reason I've always liked The Poseidon Adventure, but it is slightly post 1970.

12 Angry Men may be my all-time favorite movie and you've already mentioned it.

So I'll just add The Magnificent Seven. If for no other reason then I dig the theme music.
