I was surprised to learn that euthanasia is legal in California.
A friend messaged me a couple of weeks ago that her father-in-law had taken a serious fall that put a big slice in one of his legs. Treatment wasn't providing much relief and he was told he would never walk again.
This man is 102 years old. He was a star basketball player and track athlete at Iowa State in the 1940s, drafted by the Celtics in 1944. Is in the Iowa State Hall of Fame, along with his twin brother. He played tennis into his 90s, and still walked and functioned normally into his 100s. Wife is 97 and they've been married for 77 years. When he was told he would be bedridden the rest of his life, he said no.
Euthanasia was adopted in California in 2016 and made into law in 2025. He had to prove he was coherent, sharp and in control of his faculties. Needed written permission from two doctors and had to be able to administer the fatal drugs to himself. This was done yesterday. My friend's state of mind is in shambles.
Oddly, both his wife and his brother are not in stable mental health and are legally not allowed to make a similar decision for themselves. It's incredible to learn all of this.

So, I need to know, if I ever get diagnosed with dementia, to move to California? Because if I ever get that, I will want to just die and not burden my family - or myself. Just let me go.

That was my point, being surprised that euthanasia was allowed, with special conditions; then doubly surprised it is not allowed to those who might not know what they're doing. This was allowed only after he proved he was lucid with no dementia or Alzheimer's. His brother and wife both are mentally impaired. They might have liked to join him but their decision-making is not valid.
