Company: Ellensburg Daily Record
Position: Cover an All-America QB
Location: Ellensburg, Washington St.
Job Status: Full-time
Salary: $20,000 to $25,000
Ad Expires: March 27, 2008
Job ID: 885489

Description:
The Ellensburg Daily Record, a six-day-a week newspaper in Ellensburg, Wash., has an immediate opening for a full-time sports editor. The Daily Record — 5,800 circulation, Monday through Friday afternoon and Saturday a.m. — is located in Central Washington, 90 minutes from Seattle. The paper's circulation is growing and its Web site saw double-digit growth in both users and pageviews in 2007. This position offers the ambitious candidate a chance to prove themselves in the newspaper business with hands-on experience in writing, copy editing, design and multimedia. (In 2008, the local college team returns a first-team Division II All-America quarterback to lead a squad that advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA playoffs.) The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for covering five high schools, a solid NCAA Division II college with a full slate of sports, and one of the nation’s oldest and best PRCA rodeos. You'll also get the chance to cover Seattle's pro sports teams on occasion. It's primarily a one-person job, but the paper also uses several talented sports correspondents. The paper's managing editor and assistant editor each have previous sports experience and have helped many reporters land jobs at the next level.

Ellensburg is a lively, fast-growing town of 17,000 on the edge of the Cascade Mountains that offers some of the best outdoors opportunities in the nation. The Daily Record is an award-winning daily newspaper whose staff is driven to give its demanding readership the sort of coverage typically found at much larger papers. A bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent reporting experience is preferred. Recent college graduates are urged to apply. Knowledge of InDesign and Adobe Photoshop and multimedia skills a plus. Interested candidates may forward their resume and work samples to: Jeff Robinson, Ellensburg Daily Record, 401 N. Main Street, Ellensburg, WA 98926 or via e-mail to [email protected].

I love it when papers advertise covering a specific athlete, or team. Really tells you something about the quality of product.

There are worse places to be. A job's a job. Never been to Ellensburg, but I'm not a real fan of eastern Washington. Hot, windy, dry, a lot of it smells like cow **** and many simply pass the time by sitting on their porches, pining for the next issue of Grit and mocking the high-falutin' folks on the other side of the mountains to the west.

I know WAY too much about this area. Don't know much about this job, but anyone got questions about the area drop me a line.

And Big Sleeper is full of **** ;D. Town never smelled like cow ****, just cow death from the slaughterhouse (no longer there). And plenty of those high-falutin' folks now live in Ellensburg and commute over to the Seattle area.

ellensburg is a ****hole, period. no discussion really needs to take place concerning that fact.

also, as with any other job, ask about the editor's reputation.

I agree, though Ellensburg is more central Washington than Eastern Washington. The one thing I have always noticed is that the wind never seems to stop blowing in Ellensburg. Every time I ever drove through and stopped in that town, the ****ing wind was blowing. It was like I was in West Texas or something.

so, if you're desperate for a job don't apply because it's windy?
somebody who just got laid off might disagree with that assessment of this job
it's amazing how people slam nearly every opening in this job climate.
Just got downsized? don't apply because the place is a ****hole?
real good advice.

Wasn't saying that at all. I just said it is windy there.
In a few years I would probably be pretty cool with being an SE at a paper this size, especially 90 miles from Seattle.
I'm also guessing, though, that someone who just got laid off doesn't want to work for 20-25k at a 5,800-circulation paper.

Apparently you've never been there over Labor Day weekend, when the essence of the Ellensburg Rodeo takes over the town. Actually, it probably reeks more of horse **** than cow **** ...

i'm betting if you need a job, you look at all the possibilities. or if you are just out of J-school, you should take a look at places like ellensburg or nevada, Mo.
it's my contention that a person can do good journalism anywhere if they want, Just wondering why people slam every opening on this board.

Actually, they've filled it. The kid they hired will write sports. Another guy promoted to "assistant editor" (with probably no corresponding pay increase) will design and lay out the page.

I wasn't slamming the job at all. I was just pointing out that it is really windy there.
Also, you initially said folks that got laid off should look at this and I don't think people that were just laid off really want to move to a crappy little town in central Washington and get paid 20k. If it is a recent graduate, then by all means they should look at this.

I have thought that too, every job opening gets slammed. I'm sure you can find good and bad in every situation. The funniest ones for me are the job descriptions. "As the base of the Cascades with a great view of Mount St. Helens." Whoever took a job because of the view? Wow, on your lunch break you can go outside and look at a mountain.

Tom usually comes on too strong for my taste, but he's right on this one. Ellensburg is like Pullman without the bustling nightlife, Division I sports and cultural options ... but it does have that smell. It's where Washington stops to pee. I will not rip the paper, because I can think of worse jobs. Just not many.

Been to Pullman several times, have cousins there. I was probably the only writer in the Pac-10 to enjoy the Wazoo trip ... but that was only because I got a homecooked meal when I was in town.

They moved the feed lots in Ellensburg about 10 years ago. It hardly smells anymore.

Sounds like another in a series of endless $23,000-a-year gigs to me.
